Robert Liston (1794-1847) was a pioneering Scottish surgeon. He was the first Professor of Clinical Surgery at University College Hospital (UCH) and in 1846 he performed the first operation under anaesthesia in Europe.
The assemblage of tools is indicative of a wide range of surgical operations, reflecting the generalist role of surgeons in the early 19th century.
