NIS (Nature-Inspired Solutions) Network

NIS Network - Definition and Membership

Nature-Inspired Solutions (NIS) Network has been developed and launched by the Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE) at University College London (UCL). Nature-Inspired Solutions methodology is a systematic approach to research developed by UCL CNIE, that looks at the fundamental mechanisms at the core of desired attributes found in nature, to engineer innovative solutions to Grand Challenges, particularly focusing on sustainable development.

NIS Network In-person Event on Waste Management - 27 April 2023

A NIS Network event was delivered by UCL Engineering on Sustainable Waste Management on 27 April 2023 at Senate House, UCL.

The need to manage waste sustainably has never been more important. Recycling, bioenergy and biofuels produced through the newest waste treatment technologies will end up playing a valuable role in a modern, integrated sustainable energy system.

A panel of world leading experts presented on the day. They debated the merits of some of the latest complementary technologies/innovations in recycling household waste into fuels and feedstocks for industrial use, as well as the potential to utilise these technologies to remove carbon from the atmosphere.

This was a great opportunity for postgraduate students, researchers, academics and engineering professionals to engage with leading experts and learn more about sustainable waste management.

NIS Network Online Webinar on Water Purification - 2 May 2023

On 2 May 2023, we ran a NIS Network Webinar on Nature-Inspired Solutions: Challenges and Opportunities in Nature-Inspired Water Treatment. This online event comprised of a set of three expert presentations followed by a panel discussion and general Q&A. The aim of this webinar was to identify challenges and opportunities in nature-inspired water treatment, both from the academic and industrial point of view.

This event was organised by the Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE) at University College London (UCL). CNIE has developed a systematic Nature-Inspired Solutions approach, that looks at the fundamental mechanisms at the core of desired attributes found in nature, to engineer innovative solutions to Grand Challenges, particularly focusing on sustainable development.

The water industry faces significant challenges in ensuring that clean and safe water is available to meet the needs of people, agriculture, and industry, while also minimizing the impact on the environment and addressing issues related to climate change (e.g. low-carbon technologies) and sustainability. Could nature-inspired engineering play a significant role in addressing these challenges? Could it create solutions that are more efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly by drawing on principles from nature?

The Centre for Nature Inspired Engineering (CNIE) at UCL Chemical Engineering organised the first Meeting of the Nature-Inspired Solutions (NIS) Network on Thursday 24th November 2022.

We brought together researchers from UCL with an interest in nature-inspired research from science, engineering, biomedicine, or built-environment disciplines.

The event featured plenary talks by Marc-Olivier Coppens, Shery Huang, Julia Yeomans, and James Durrant, followed by a session of lightning talks. The event was organised by Diego López Barreiro, and Amita Ummadisingu, who will also soon be delivering the NIS MSc at UCL East.
