  • On 10 December 2008, UCL welcomed a group of year 10 and year 11 students from South Australia who hold the SpiRit of Science Maurice de Rohan Scholarships for 2008.  The Scholarships enable talented young people to attend the Royal Institution Christmas lectures in London.

The students spent the day as guests of UCL Engineering Sciences, spending time with Dr David Swapp in the Virtual Reality Suite and attending the Christmas lecture given by Dr Richard Bucknall of UCL Mechanical Engineering on Project SolarFox, the UCL solar-powered car that raced from Darwin to Adelaide in 2007.

Former Adelaide Thinker in Residence Baroness Susan Greenfield, Director of the Royal Institution, established the scholarships in 2005 to help students from under-privileged backgrounds develop their interest in science and pursue science-related careers.

General verdict by the students on UCL Engineering: 'It's pretty cool.'
