  • Students at UCL now have a new hall of residence to call home. Ian Baker House, named after UCL's former Administrative Secretary, provides 91 single-study bedrooms in a self-catering building in the newly-landscaped grounds of Ramsay Hall, W1.

Major-General Ian Baker CBE, was Secretary of UCL from 1982-1991 and naming this residence in his honour continues the tradition that has seen student residences named after former Secretaries of UCL, namely John Tovell and Arthur Tattersall, both of whom have residences named after them on Gower Street. The official opening of Ian Baker House, by Mrs Sally Baker, will take place later in the year.

In addition to Ian Baker House, two other residences that had been undergoing refurbishment over the past year have re-opened in time for the start of term.

Campbell House East, composed of six late-Georgian town houses on Taviton Street, has been totally modernised and can now accommodate 138 students in both single and twin study bedrooms complete with computer links and with full self-catering facilities. It also has a garden and terrace as well as two common rooms for its residents to enjoy.

Meanwhile, Hawkridge House on Warden Road NW5 also underwent a complete makeover, inside and out, and now offers 238 single rooms in flat format on a self-catered basis.

This summer also saw the completion of the new Goldsmid House on Wilton Plaza SW1. This residence, replacing the old Goldsmid House off Oxford Street, not only has more rooms than it's predecessor, with 158 single study bedrooms, but each room now offers full en-suite facilities.
