Five ESRC Future Leaders awards for UCL researchers

The scheme aims to support early career social scientists by funding social science research projects, and providing researchers with an opportunity to develop the skills and experience they need to become leaders in their field.

Over 100 applicants were invited to submit a proposal, out of 300 initial applications; only 54 awards were made nationally, of which five went to UCL.

Professor David Price, UCL Vice-Provost (Research) said: "I'd like to extend my congratulations to the successful applicants and thanks to ESRC. Developing excellent individuals into research leaders is central to our mission at UCL, so this is an especially pleasing achievement. I very much hope that these awards will be an invaluable opportunity to develop their academic careers."

The successful applicants are:

Dr David Vinson (UCL Cognitive Perceptual & Brain Sciences) "Making sense from the hands and mouth: multimodal integration in spoken and signed languages"

Dr Ana Tajadura-Jimenez (UCL Interaction Centre) "The Hearing Body: How auditory perception influences body representation"

Dr Evelyne Mercure (UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience) "Influence of early experience of speech and language on their processing and neural representation: A study of hearing infants with deaf mothers"

Dr Hilary Geoghegan (UCL Geography) 'Harnessing Enthusiasm: Ecosocialities and Citizens as Early-Warning Systems'.

Vanesa Castan-Broto (UCL Development Planning Unit) "Mapping Urban Energy Landscapes in the Global South"
