Vice-President (Operations) Fiona Ryland moves to senior civil service role

Fiona joined UCL as Executive Director of HR in April 2017 and became Chief Operating Officer in October 2018, expanding her role to take responsibility for key professional services teams including HR, Finance, Business Affairs, Legal Services, Estates and ISD. Following a review of portfolios, she became Vice-President (Operations) in April 2021, with Student and Registry Services added to her remit.

 Congratulating her, President & Provost Dr Michael Spence said:

 “Fiona has done an outstanding job in all the roles she has held at UCL, with her responsibilities steadily growing in reflection of her outstanding abilities and can-do leadership. She has also been a tremendous colleague, whose judgement can be relied on as much as her sense of fun. I have personally been very grateful for her strong support during my transition to UCL, and in the strategic direction that we are setting for the university. The Civil Service is extremely lucky to have secured her. Her new colleagues and the whole country will benefit from the insight, commitment and wise judgement that she brings to everything she does.”

Fiona says:

 “UCL is an amazing place and it has been a privilege to work with so many talented people in one of the world’s best universities. I have learnt a huge amount and I’m looking forward to taking that to my new role, along with many happy memories. I know UCL will go from strength to strength and that the brilliant teams I lead will continue to be the engines of that success.”

 Fiona will leave UCL in September and recruitment for her successor will begin immediately.
