Abstract: It has long been argued that genes encode shape though how they might do so remains largely not understood. Exploring the dynamical features and mechanisms of tissue shape changes and tissue growth in Drosophila this talk will develop the notion that information rests on three pillars: genetics/biochemical activity, mechanics and geometry. I will contrast and seek to integrate two general modalities of information flow driving morphogenesis: inherited information executing a deterministic program and information resulting from non-equilibrium self-organisation across scales.
I will illustrate this in the context of tissue flow in embryos and tissue doming in the developing wing. The talk will emphasize the importance of geometry during tissue morphogenesis.
