HomeOne of UCL’s founding departments, UCL Chemistry is one of the UK’s premier Chemistry departments, with 94% of our research deemed to be world-leading or internationally excellent in the UK’s Research Excellence Framework (2014). The 1904 Nobel prize in Chemistry was awarded to William Ramsay for the discovery of five noble gases at UCL.
Research carried out at UCL Chemistry is at the forefront in areas such as chemical biology, nanotechnology, materials and computational chemistry, and your professors are leaders in these fields. The department is equipped with modern undergraduate laboratories and has close ties to research centres such as the London Centre for Nanotechnology.
You will benefit from exposure to new ideas and areas of research and the diversity of skills that we expect students to develop as part of the assessment process. Modules draw on the interdisciplinary aspect of modern chemistry and you will gain an insight into the interactions between disciplines.
Many modules involve three components: formal lectures, weekly tutorials and laboratory work. Students admitted for the Fall Term only will be assessed by a special departmental examination at the end of their studies in December. UK chemistry degrees have a vertical structure and therefore modules at higher levels normally ask for specific prior study. Note that at level 2 laboratory work is only available in the full year modules.
Please note that this guide lists a range of popular modules offered as a representative sample. It is not exhaustive and, since the guide is published ahead of time, module options may have changed, been deleted or replaced. If you have very specific study needs or require confirmation of module availability for 2024/25, you are strongly advised to get in touch with the relevant Affiliate contact, listed on this subject page, before making an application.
Affiliate students in other departments who wish to take a Chemistry module must demonstrate to the Affiliate Tutor (in the form of course syllabi from their home institution) that they meet all academic prerequisites prior to attempting to register for that module. We are not able to accept applicants without sufficient evidence of required prior learning.
Please note that Erasmus applicants who have a research component in their studies must apply to the full year programme.
Full synopses of all Chemistry modules can be found here.
Level 3 and 4 modules
Many may be available to affiliate students with the required pre-requisite knowledge – typically all the core material from Levels 1 and 2. Students wishing to take Level 3 and 4 modules must discuss them with Dr Lewis (see below) prior to application.
Applications where there is no record of discussion with the Affiliate tutor prior to submission may be rejected.
There are no additional costs associated with this module.
