HomeUCL Greek & Latin is one of the top-rated Classics departments in the UK. With specialists in the fields of literature, philosophy, historiography, linguistics and papyrology, our expertise ranges from the earliest beginnings of the classical world to its influence in the modern world.
The department is located close to some of the finest resources for the study of the classical world in Britain: not only does UCL have an excellent classics library, but the British Museum, British Library and Institute of Classical Studies are all only a few minutes’ walk away.
Our wide range of modules in language, literature, philosophy and culture will enable you to develop skills in all areas of the discipline. You will also benefit from our close collaboration with UCL History and the UCL Institute of Archaeology.
Most modules are taught in lectures or classes. Assessment is usually a combination of coursework and final examination. Alternative assessment for term-only students is available on most modules (please contact the department for more information). Modules are open to all students, though prerequisites, particularly in language studies, may apply to some modules.
Please note that this guide lists a range of popular modules offered as a representative sample. It is not exhaustive and, since the guide is published ahead of time, module options may have changed, been deleted or replaced. If you have very specific study needs or require confirmation of module availability for 2024/25, you are strongly advised to get in touch with the relevant Affiliate contact, listed on this subject page, before making an application.
Many of our Level 2 and 3 modules are suitable for both second- and third-year students. Please contact the department to enquire about any modules that interest you.
