Abstract
In this paper Lesley Caldwell will discuss the personal and intellectual links between Winnicott and Klein, and their increasing divergence theoretically and clinically from the Controversial Discussions to Winnicott's obituary of Klein in 1960. Lesley Caldwell will suggest that subsequent developments in British object relations and the increasing importance ascribed to the work of Wilfred Bion find their roots in the centrality of their disagreements in the scientific and administrative life of the British Society in the 1950s.
