UCL's Collaborative Social Science Domain’s (CSSD) new Coordinating Group for mid-career researchers will be a peer-support group for social science researchers in the middle stages of their careers. This group will make an important contribution to the mid-career researcher conversation at UCL. As a first step, we are seeking to recruit a Mid-Career Researcher Coordinating Group to help lead a wider community of mid-career researchers at UCL. Our new group will identify the needs and challenges typically encountered by mid-career researchers, and find ways to address them. The Coordinating Group will initiate a broad-based programme of activities that will foster support and professional development at the mid-career level. To support this programme, the Coordinating Group will benefit from funding from the UCL ESRC’s Impact Accelerator Award

Time commitment
We understand that people will contributing their time on a voluntary basis but as a rough guide, about half a day a month time commitment will be necessary.
Key features of the Mid-Career Steering Group
1) The Coordinating Group will be is a cross-UCL academic panel, from a range of social science backgrounds, drawn from a broad spectrum
2) The Coordinating Group, in consultation with the CSSD Chair, will:
- clarify the definition of a mid-career researcher at UCL
- support mid-career researchers in developing their researcher identity
- build awareness of key departmental/faculty heads about the mid-career researcher programme
- Inform how ESRC IAA funding may best support UCL’s social science MCR community
3) The Coordinating Group will operate in close collaboration with:
- Research Culture (concentrating upon contract issues and precarity) and Organisational Development (concentrating upon skills development and working with external organisations) to avoid duplication and arrive at a set of complementary activities
- CSSD’s ECR Group
4) The group will be supported by the Domain Chair, a mid-career researcher Champion from our Steering Group and a Strategic Coordinator
5) Once members of the Coordinating Group have been recruited, they will identify a chair/co-chairs who will also be a member(s) of the CSSD’s Steering Group
6) Members are not subject to a specific length of service, however 1 – 3 years is recommended
Requirements for Mid-Career Researcher Coordinating Group Members
1) Be in a Grade 8 or 9 position
2) Commitment to the development and co-facilitation of a high quality, cross-disciplinary development programme of activities for mid-career social researcher from across UCL. Identify suitable opportunities for mid-career researcher activities and help deliver cross-cutting initiatives for these researchers at UCL
3) Good communication and planning skills
4) Provide ad-hoc advice at a strategic level to inform future directions and activities
5) Attend termly meetings and be a critical friend to the Coordinating Group to help it to deliver its remit and activities
