Apply for Funds as part of the Environment Domain Early Career Network Small Grants Scheme 2022 Deadline Monday 14 February 12noon
The UCL Environment Domain Early Career Network (EDEN) are pleased to share their first small grants scheme aimed at funding cross disciplinary internal projects within the environment research space.
EDEN provides support to researchers in the early stages of their career in environmental research at UCL. The network aims to connect all early career researchers with an interest in environmental studies to promote multi-disciplinary research and provides a platform for peer support, career advice, mentoring, training and funding information.
EDEN Small Grants Scheme
We are looking to support small, but ambitious projects from our ECR community which facilitate or enhance cross disciplinary environmental research. This could include (but is not limited to): environment and health, built environment, sustainability, earth sciences, anthropology, environmental engineering, climate change, biodiversity, archaeology, arts and humanities, politics, mathematics and more. It is vital the proposals are rooted in environmental science and combine two or more disciplines to help cross disciplinary/organisational boundaries.
Activities could include:
- Workshops and knowledge exchange events;
- Small pilot projects to bring different groups together around research ideas;
- Production of reports or briefings;
- Creation of networks;
You can apply for up to £2,000 which must be spent by 31 March 2022. This is funded by the NERC Discipline Hopping funds to promote research that crosses disciplinary and organisational boundaries.
Eligibility and application instructions
Each project must be supported by two UCL internal investigators. The Principle Investigator (PI) must be at PDRA level or above (however still within scope of being an early career researcher- UKRI define this as someone within 8 years of their PhD viva, excluding career breaks). The Co-Investigator (Co-I) can be any applicant deemed to be an early career researcher, this includes PhD students in this instance. Both of these must be from within UCL. This is to fit the constraints of the funding from NERC.
You can bring in external partners, however we cannot transfer money out of UCL.
We strongly encourage you to bring together ECRs from different departments or faculties, for example a PI from Geography and a Co-I from the Energy Institute, however where this is not possible please do show how you intend to unite different disciplines.
You must fill out the application form before the deadline to be considered. If you require this is an alternative format please do not hesitate to get in contact with Dr Becca Burns on b.burns@ucl.ac.uk
For this funding call we also request that the PI notifies their departmental finance office as we will require an internal worktribe to be developed ahead of submission. If you need any help doing this please do get in touch.
As part of our commitment to equity and inclusion in relation to the Equality Act 2010, we would particularly like to encourage applications from colleagues who identify as underrepresented groups including, but not limited to, women, BAME, LGBT+ community and disabled individuals at UCL to apply for this opportunity.
Selection Criteria
Proposals will be reviewed and scored by a panel consisting of the EDEN chairs, an Environment Domain co-chair and the Environment Domain Strategic Co-ordinator.
Proposals will be scored using the following criteria:
- Quality of the application and originality of topic and/or approach;
- Cross-disciplinarity: -How does the research/activities develop an understanding of different research perspectives and methodologies? How does the research go beyond common disciplinary boundaries? What new collaborations will be created?
- Potential to deliver impact
- Extent to which the proposed activities can be delivered within the timeframe and budget.
Terms and Conditions Successful applicants must:
