Professor Carey Jewitt to follow Professor Alison Fuller as Chair of the Collaborative Social Science Domain
Professor Carey Jewitt (UCL IOE) will be the new chair of the Collaborative Social Science Domain (CSSD) Steering Group, UCL’s initiative to support cross-disciplinary collaboration in social science. Professor Jewitt is part of the UCL Knowledge Lab, an interdisciplinary research centre that investigates media, technology and digital innovation.
She succeeds Professor Alison Fuller (UCL IOE), who has chaired the steering group since the domain was launched in 2016, and initiated the Social Science Plus funding scheme that supports cross-disciplinary, social science led pilot projects that will lay the basis for major external funding applications.
Professor David Price, UCL Vice-Provost (Research), said: “Fostering and facilitating new research collaborations involving social scientists as well as scientists from other parts of the disciplinary spectrum at UCL has never been more important or necessary in pursuit of research which benefits the ‘public good’.
We know that fostering these connections takes more than just a theoretical commitment – it requires a deep understanding of the practical challenges facing researchers, and the resources and support to assist them. Under Professor Fuller’s leadership the CSSD has grown into a thriving community, and I would like to thank her for her dedication and hard work in building the domain.
I would also like to welcome Professor Jewitt as the new chair; I am confident that this phase of the Domain’s development will offer new opportunities for collaboration across and beyond UCL.”
Professor Carey Jewitt said: I am really excited to work as part of CSSD to foster and amplify cross-disciplinary dialogues and collaboration between social science and other UCL disciplines. Interdisciplinarity is central to my research and I am passionate about its potentials for better understanding each other and a wide range of phenomena. I look forward to help develop and grow this important UCL domain.”
Professor Alison Fuller said: “It’s been a real privilege to Chair UCL’s Collaborative Social Science Domain since its inception, working with fantastic colleagues from across the university to establish the Domain as a resource, hub, and champion of and for research cross-disciplinarity, capacity building and innovation.
I am absolutely delighted that Professor Carey Jewitt has been appointed as the Domain’s new Chair. Carey brings with her enormous experience and expertise in leading and undertaking cross-disciplinary research, working with and inspiring researchers at different career stages and from diverse backgrounds. I have no doubt that the CSSD will go from strength to strength under her leadership.
I would like to thank Professor David Price, the Deans, members of the CSSD steering group and Michael Reade, the Domain’s Coordinator, for all their support and commitment to the Domain during my tenure.”
