Asbestos safety at UCL
14 December 2022
The UCL Estates Asbestos Safety Team is responsible for managing the risk of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) across UCL’s Estate.
UCL recognises its responsibilities and duties under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR) and will take appropriate action to ensure the health and safety of staff, students, contractors and others, who may be affected by the risks associated with asbestos-containing materials present in buildings.
All staff members and contractors have a duty to co-operate and engage with the UCL Asbestos Team which is supported by an asbestos consultant; Lucion Services.
Asbestos Management Plan
The Asbestos Management Plan (AMP) sets out the arrangements and responsibilities for managing asbestos across UCL’s portfolio, preventing asbestos exposure to staff, contractors, students and members of the public whilst on UCL’s premises.
The current AMP was approved by the Work Health and Safety Committee in February 2021. This applies to all buildings constructed prior to 2000, with UCL responsible for maintenance and repairs. Normal occupancy activities within UCL are very unlikely to cause damage to asbestos-containing materials. Any maintenance or building works are controlled and carefully planned to ensure the works are undertaken safely.
As part of Asbestos Management at UCL, every asbestos-containing material item undertakes an annual risk assessment, with all details uploaded and available on UCL’s Asbestos Register, NexGen. Email the Asbestos Safety Team to access the register.
