New guidance on the safe management of laser cutters released. This guidance is crucial for departments utilising laser cutting equipment and designated Laser Safety Officers (LSOs).

Safety Services is excited to announce the launch of comprehensive laser cutting guidance on the Laser Safety SharePoint site. This guidance provides step-by-step instructions for safely managing laser cutters, focusing on the equipment and associated processes.
Why is this important?
While most laser cutters are classified as Class 1 or 2, posing minimal laser beam hazards, the cutting process introduces other significant risks. This guidance focuses on these "non-beam hazards," including:
- Fire: Laser cutters require proper fire safety measures due to the materials being cut.
- Fumes: The fumes generated can be harmful if not adequately ventilated.
What's covered in the guide?
Laser cutters require careful planning and safety considerations beyond the laser beam itself. The laser cutter guidance provides a step-by-step process for safe laser cutter operation, covering the entire lifecycle from purchase to maintenance:
- Purchasing and approval: Obtain LSO approval, ensure compliance with safety standards, and confirm a suitable location considering fire safety, ventilation, and power supply.
- Installation: Ensure proper documentation is received and stored, including commissioning reports for any Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems.
- Risk assessment: Complete a thorough risk assessment using the specialist laser template, focusing on non-beam hazards.
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs): Develop detailed instructions for user safety, including LEV operation, pre-use checks, emergency procedures, and acceptable materials for cutting.
- Training and supervision: Comprehensive local training is essential for all laser cutter users. This includes laser hazards, safe operating procedures, and emergency plans.
- Maintenance and servicing: Conduct regular local checks and implement a formal process for safe external servicing by contractors.
