Safety Alert – Candles at UCL

10 October 2024

This Safety Alert concerns the use of candles within UCL buildings.

What is the issue?

As the Winter evenings approach and the new term gets under way, it is timely to remind everyone that the use of candles within any UCL building is prohibited.  This is due to the risk of fire or of a smoke alarm being triggered by a naked flame.

Technical Note TN041 (Religious Festival & Other Decorations – Fire Safety Guidance) provides clear guidance on the UCL position regarding the use of candles, festive decorations, and similar activities.

Action to be taken

1.    Review all workplaces and accommodation buildings for evidence of candles, diffusers, or room scenters.
2.    These should be removed from UCL properties and disposed of in a safe manner.
3.    This alert should be brought to the attention of all students, staff, and visitors.
