Radiation Protection Supervisor (Ionising Radiations) training
This one-day, classroom-based course is for UCL appointed Departmental Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs) who supervise X-rays, sealed and unsealed sources.
Course description
This instructor-led course provides Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs) with the necessary knowledge of the principles of radiation protection, applicable legislation and their implementation through the UCL radiation management system. This course also provides information on UCL Operating Procedures (OPs) to enable RPSs to supervise the safe and compliant use of ionising radiations in their departments. It concludes with a course assessment.
It is also suitable for RPS that are due refresher training.
Prerequisites
- RPSs (sealed sources) must have successfully completed the eLearning course the Principles of Radiation Safety.
- RPSs (unsealed sources) must have successfully completed the eLearning course the Principles of Radiation Safety and must familiar with the SHURS course content.
- RPSs (X-rays) must have successfully completed the eLearning course Basic X-ray Physics and Safe Use of X-rays.
- RPSs (X-ray and radioactive materials [sealed or unsealed]) must have successfully completed all of the aforementioned training.
During the course we will expect you to be able to recall the above eLearning course content. Therefore, if you completed it a while ago, please refresh!
Objectives
This training course will provide Department Radiation Protection Supervisors with the following information.
- Refresher on radiation basics
- Roles and responsibilities of the RPS, as well as other radiation roles
- The Radiation Management system and the UCL Operating Procedures (OPs) and their implementation within departments, including:
- Registration and Radiation Risk Assessments
- Local rules and written departmental procedures
- Best Available Technique
- Designation
- Checks and maintenance
- Monitoring
- Vacating areas
- Management of radiation workers and dosimetry
- Waste management
- Incident management
Target audience
UCL Radiation Protection Supervisors (RPSs) covering X-rays, sealed and unsealed sources. Appointed RPS and those looking to be appointed. RPSs requiring refresher training
Cost
Training courses are free to UCL staff however your Department will be charged £50 if you fail to attend when booked on a course. Non-attendance at first aid courses will incur a higher non-attendance fee.
