Who this course is for
This course is open to anyone interested in the subject. You don't need any particular knowledge or experience to attend.
The Portfolio Development: Film course is recommended for those who would like to submit portfolios to one of the UCL Media BA programmes or other film-related courses.
Course content and structure
The course will take place between 15 and 19 July 2024 and will include face-to-face classes taking place at UCL East.
The structure of the course is as follows:
Day 1: Filmmaking essentials
- Introduction to Filmmaking: basics and terminology
- Storytelling/writing
- Cinematography
- Sound
- Postproduction
Day 2: Understanding your unique voice
- Self-assessment: identifying your filmmaking style and strengths.
- Defining your voice: what do you want to tell?
Day 3: Crafting your filmmaker statement
- Articulating your filmmaking philosophy and vision.
- Writing an impactful filmmaker statement.
- Peer review and feedback session on filmmaker statements.
Day 4: Selecting and presenting your work
- Curating your best work: short film selection and editing.
- Creating a cohesive portfolio structure.
- Practical exercise: editing your showreel.
Day 5: Feedback and Fine-Tuning
- Peer and Instructor feedback on portfolios.
- Refining your portfolio based on feedback.
- Final portfolio presentation strategies.
Learning outcomes
Participants will leave this course with not only an in-depth understanding of filmmaking but also a refined and polished portfolio ready to make a lasting impression on potential employers, film schools, or collaborators.
