Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?

SSEES’s academic excellence and its specialisation in Central and Eastern Europe stood out to me immediately. Studying in London, a global finance centre, has always been my dream. UCL’s central London location helped solidify my decision. Now, being here at SSEES, I feel I’m living that dream, even better than I could have imagined!

What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?

I am studying Economics and Business with East European Studies at SSEES. When studying A-level Economics, I developed a strong interest in international trade and globalisation. I discussed multinational companies’ impacts on developing nations in my EPQ project, during which time countries in central and eastern Europe caught my interest. SSEES is ideal for pursuing these interests, and its rich academic resources offer me a perfect opportunity to delve deeper into regional economics.

How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?

I have been really enjoying my courses. It’s amazing that SSEES provides a variety of modules while allowing us to take courses from other departments if we wish. I am excited about Introduction to Microeconomics, which builds on the basics I learned at A-level. The tutorials have been both engaging and insightful, showing us the beauty of economics through concise yet thought-provoking examples.

How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?

The staff at SSEES are incredibly dedicated and enthusiastic! Every professor is happy to answer questions after lecture, and we can discuss both academic and personal questions with our personal tutors. I myself have a brilliant tutor, who is not only willing to discuss course-related questions but also offers me valuable career advice.

What about the social life?

Home to students from over 60 countries, SSEES is a welcoming and diverse community. Everyone here is friendly and easy to connect with. I have made many friends, from different countries and majors. Meeting new people is always a joy! UCL also offers a wide range of clubs and societies, where everyone can find a place that fits their interests.

What are your future plans/aspirations?

I aspire to work in investment banking, with a current interest in M&A.

Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?

Do take some time to explore available modules. You may want to keep your career goals in mind when making decisions. And for anyone considering this course: Don’t hesitate to take the plunge. It’s bound to be a wonderful experience!
