St. Serafim of Sarov (1754–1833) was an ascetic monk famed for his eremitic life in the forests and his spiritual eldership to Russia’s Orthodox pilgrims. He was a symbol of popular piety, canonised in controversial circumstances in 1903. This presentation explores Chapter One of Peter’s PhD dissertation, which argues that Serafim’s elevation to sainthood was the result of Russia’s lay peasantry and tsar Nicholas II’s shared desire for ‘authentic’, traditional Orthodoxy. It will examine the challenges in tackling the material for this Chapter and the significance of Serafim’s reception.
This presentation will be held on Zoom. Please register for the event via Eventbrite and you will be sent the link to watch the presentation.
