The talk will examine the racist undercurrents of the “demographic crisis” in Bulgaria by looking at the collaborative projects of Roma displacement following racist rallies against “Roma aggression” in 2017.

Piro Rexhepi is the Alexander Nash Fellow at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at University College London. He is the author of White Enclosures: Racial Capitalism and Coloniality along the Balkan Route, Duke University Press, 2023.
This talk is part of a mini-series on “Contemporary Debates in Post-Socialist Theory and Practice”, co-organised by Maria Chehonadskih (Queen Mary UoL) and Neda Genova (University of Warwick). It is supported by the Centre for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies at QMUL and the Leverhulme Trust. It is organised as part of the UCL SSEES Southeast European studies seminar series.
