Gursimran Chawla is in his first year of his BA Economics and Business with East European Studies degree.
Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?
The current conflict in Ukraine has sparked a lot of interest in the region, and I wanted to learn more about the economics of Eastern Europe. UCL SSEES has a world-renowned reputation for its expertise in this area, and I was excited to be part of such a vibrant and diverse community.
What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?
I'm studying Economics and Business. I've always been interested in how economies work, and I think that studying economics can help me understand the world around me better. The course at UCL SSEES is particularly appealing because it offers a unique blend of theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as opportunities to learn about the specific economic challenges facing Eastern Europe.
How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?
The course is going great. I'm enjoying learning about all the different aspects of economics, from microeconomics to macroeconomics. My favourite module so far has been microeconomics, which has taught me a lot about how markets work and how to apply economic theory to real-world problems.
How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?
The academic staff at SSEES are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects. They are always willing to help students, whether it's by answering questions in lectures or providing additional support outside of class. I've found the support to be excellent, and I feel like I'm getting a high-quality education.
What about the social life?
The social life at SSEES is fantastic! There are so many different clubs and societies to get involved in, and it's easy to meet people with similar interests. I've made some great friends here, and I'm really enjoying my time at UCL.
What are your future plans/aspirations?
After I graduate, I'd like to pursue a career in research or policy analysis related to the SSEES region. I'm particularly interested in the economic development of Eastern Europe and the challenges that the region faces.
Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?
If you're interested in learning more about Eastern Europe and its challenges, then I would highly recommend this course. It's a challenging but rewarding experience, and you'll learn a lot about yourself and the world around you.
