Book Launch - Equity, Exclusion and Everyday Science Learning

9 May 2019

The result of several years research, 'Equity, Exclusion and Everyday Science Learning' by Dr Emily Dawson has recently been published by Routledge, and STS held a launch party to celebrate.

'Equity, Exclusion and Everyday Science Learning' follows Dr Dawson's attempts to understand better how minoritised groups experience science, including learning resources such as museums. The book draws on two years of ethnographic research carried out in London with five community groups who identified as Asian, Somali, Afro-Caribbean, Latin American and Sierra Leonean - exploring their experiences of everyday science learning from a sociological perspective, with social justice as a guiding concern.

Following introductions from Dr Simon Lock and Dr Subhadra Das, Emily gave a brief introduction to the assembled crowd, discussing the inspiration for the book, the work involved, and the hope that the book will be a useful resource for those working on issues of equity and social justice in science.

Attendees were also able to read a 24 page 'Zine' edition of the book, where former STS MSc student Sophie Wang summarised the work in a simple, easy to follow comic format. For more information on the book, including links to purchase, you can visit Dr Dawson's book website - the zine version of the book can be found there.
