The full list of postgraduate research fees for new students enrolling at UCL for the first time in the 2025 to 2026 academic year.
These fees are for new postgraduate research students starting in the 2025-26 academic year. Unless otherwise stated, the published fees are for Year 1 only and your fees in subsequent years may increase by up to 5% to reflect increased operational costs, market forces and inflation.
The academic year for Postgraduate Research students now starts on 01 October. This should not impact on fees or studentships. If you are concerned, please contact Student Fees.

Jointly delivered programmes
Where UCL jointly delivers a programme with other universities or colleges, the fees may be set by the collaborating institution. Where possible, relevant fee information will be included here.
Non-Resident PhD Programmes
A deduction of £1,500 from full-time fees and £750 from part-time fees will apply. This applies to both UK and Overseas students.
Study leave
Fees for Study Leave during a Research Degree will be charged at half the full-time or part-time UK fee, depending on your registration status.
Additional Fee Element
A minority of PhD students may have to pay an Additional Fee Element (AFE), also known as a bench fees. The AFE covers additional costs which are not included in the published tuition fee, such as consumables, equipment, materials and other items, but it doesn't include visa costs. As each PhD is unique, your AFE will be specifically calculated by your supervisor. Please contact your supervisor directly for guidance. Your offer letter will confirm any AFE you will be required to pay.
There are five bands for AFE charges:
- Band 1 is £1,000
- Band 2 is £2,500
- Band 3 is £5,000
- Band 4 is £10,000
- Band 5 is for variable amounts above £10,000
