Final year: How to get the most out of your time

2 October 2018

Final year as an undergraduate is when your studies come to a head and you prepare for a life beyond UCL. Here, four people from across the UCL community share their tips for making the most of it...

final year - most of your time

Dr Parama Chaudhury, SFHEA - Principal Teaching Fellow, Department of Economics

My main recommendation would be to make full use of the amazing resources that UCL offers - the library, the variety of modules on offer, societies and other activities, and of course being in Bloomsbury – don’t make the final year just about exams and job offers. It’s not often that we get access to the wealth of resources available at a world-leading university and this, along with the friends you make and the experiences you have this year, will help you make memories for a lifetime.

Dr Luke Fenton-Glynn - Senior Lecturer in Philosophy

The final year of your studies can be quite intense. But remember that it's a marathon and not a sprint, and you need to look after yourself if you're going to produce your best work. That means having a good work-life balance: make sure that you exercise, socialise with friends, and keep up your hobbies. Doing so will make your work time much more productive.

Abeni O. Adeyemi - Women's Officer, Student's Union UCL

My main advice would be to prioritise your studies and wellbeing, to surround yourself with likeminded students with similar goals. Also to create a personal support system that you can rely on for when it gets difficult. And finally, to utilise the support & wellbeing systems UCL Union has in place to support students.

Robert Donovan - Deputy Head, UCL Careers

Making plans for your time after UCL can be daunting, not least if your fellow students appear to be clear about their next steps! If you are uncertain, you are definitely not alone, but the key is to focus on what is appropriate for you. The team at UCL Careers can support you.  Join us at Themed Weeks, Fairs, and other events, including skills sessions such as the Careers Essentials talks programme. To explore your options with a Careers Consultant, book in for a 20-minute Short Guidance appointment. In the end, it is you who will take things forward, but we can support you every step of the way.
