We are a central UCL service based at the Centre for Languages and International Education, here to support you with your academic communication during your studies at UCL.

Welcome to UCL and to the UCL Academic Communication Centre!

We can assist you to further develop your academic communication (including your academic English) within your discipline and to help you integrate into UK Higher Education academic culture and conventions so that you can make the most out of your time here.

We work closely with UCL academic departments and faculties to develop workshops, classes and tutorials, all offered online, to enhance your communication skills.

Depending on your course of study, we offer:

Academic writing, presentation and dissertation writing courses and workshops

In our interactive workshops, we focus on discipline-relevant writing, presentation, seminar and research skills. We cover topics such as academic argument, critical thinking and academic style.

One-to-one tutorials

In tutorials you are able to submit a section of your work in advance and receive feedback on how you can improve your writing. We can also help with advice, general academic writing queries or support for presentations and vivas.

Information on how to sign up for the above will be circulated via your faculty.

Credit-bearing modules

Depending on your programme, you may be able to select one of these 15-credit modules as a part of your degree to develop your academic writing and English language skills for academic purposes in the context of your discipline. Please refer to the CLIE website.

Writing retreats

At our writing retreats, you can work on your own writing in a supportive and structured environment.

Online resources

We also have a range of online resources for you to work through at your own pace and in your own time, including a Self-Access Centre.
