Step into...the Christmas Switch Off 2021!

26 November 2021

On Christmas Day, UCL buildings emit the same CO2 as 100 flights to New York. Help reduce this number and join our Switch Off: pledge, win prizes and ensure that your Christmas is not only coal, but carbon free!

Over the 2020 Christmas period, we helped UCL save 147 tonnes of carbon through switching off items that would have otherwise been left running. That’s equivalent to planting 2,425 trees. It also saved UCL a tree-mendous £88,441!

Help UCL reach its goal of reducing energy consumption by 40% and for its buildings to become net zero carbon by 2024 by SWITCHING OFF this Christmas!

How to get involved:

  1. Decide your switch off actions: use Sustainable UCL's checklists to see what you could switch off. Do you work in an office? Make sure screens are switched off rather than on stand-by before you go on holiday. Are you staying in halls? Unplug the microwave before you leave.

  2. Make your pledge to switch off via this form by the 17th of December, and be in with a chance to win prizes for your department and/or accommodation. There are prizes up for grabs for the department or division and the accommodation which has made the most pledges!

  3. Encourage others to switch off using the resources provided by Sustainable UCL, including email templates and posters. Post about the Switch Off on social media using Sustainable UCL's resources, tagging @SustainableUCL and using the hashtag #ChangePossible. Include a picture of yourself switching off if you can!
