Changes to building opening hours to combat climate change

26 May 2022

As part of UCL’s commitment to reach net zero carbon by 2030, and in light of spiraling energy costs, we are moving forward with various measures to reduce energy consumption across the campus.

We have identified a number of buildings which are open 24/7 but are significantly underutilised outside peak hours. In many of these buildings, we maintain heating, ventilation, and lighting despite the low utilisation.

We are therefore planning to close selected buildings, or areas of buildings, overnight (7pm – 7am) and at weekends where there won’t be unreasonable impacts on teaching, research or other business-critical activities.

Non-critical lighting, heating and ventilation systems will be switched off or put into lower power modes wherever practical. Access for cleaners will be maintained.

There is a range of alternative student study spaces still available.

The change in building opening hours is planned to take effect from Friday 17th June 2022.

Phase 1 buildings that will be closed overnight (7pm – 7am) and at weekends from the 17th June 2022:

  • 10 - 11 Montague St
  • 10 Woburn Square
  • 11 Woburn Square
