UCL Arena Centre are delivering this session, which is open to all UCL staff who teach.
Presence in the online environment is not as straight forward a concept as it is in the traditional classroom. We can’t be as spontaneous and can’t rely on visual cues or body language.
There are, however, many ways in which technology can enable us to guide our students and scaffold their progress through the course, sometimes even more effectively than in a face-to-face setting. We just need to be more intentional about it and put some effort into finding our own approach to being present for and with our students.
Throughout this session, you will learn some tips on building teacher presence in the online space, from:
- developing a communication strategy
- including creating short videos
- managing time and workload
- designing for interaction with your students in mind.
Being present online is not equivalent to unlimited availability. It also does not have to be (all) synchronous.
It's the small touches that count most. It's all about finding a balance and nurturing a learning space where students feel free to express themselves creatively, collaborate in different settings, fail safely and never stop being curious.
