An Introduction to Examining the Doctorate, 18 October (online)

You will receive an introduction to UCL's procedures and guidelines for examining doctorates, guidance on effective practice, including online and hybrid vivas, as well as recommendations on how to prepare for examination at other institutions. The focus is on research doctorates but we will consider some factors that are specific to professional doctorates and other doctoral programmes.

Arena Centre and UCL's Doctoral School facilitate this session, which is delivered by Faculty Graduate Tutors and colleagues from Student Registry Services. The session is open to all new and existing research supervisors who have completed the mandatory online training. You will receive an introduction to UCL's procedures and guidelines for examining research doctorates, guidance on effective practice, including in online or hybrid viva scenarios, as well as recommendations on how to prepare for examination at other institutions.

In this workshop we will: 

  • explain UCL's examining procedures and guidelines
  • prepare you for examination at other institutions 
  • explore various scenarios through case studies
  • share best practice

Participants who have completed this course/session will be able to:

  • understand UCL policy and procedure for effective examining of doctorates  
  • be more confident in examining doctorates at UCL and at other institutions
