In this video: Using GenAI in work, study and leisure

Generative AI can be incorporated into many common work, study and leisure tasks.

It can be helpful to think of an AI tool as a partner in dialogue, rather than as a definitive source. Often the conversational element of using an AI tool can help you refine and develop your thinking as you engage with it. Understanding where it gets things wrong can be helpful to you in getting things right!

You might ask a GenAI tool to help you brainstorm, to indicate some important areas of a particular topic, or suggest ideas or people that might be relevant to something you are doing. GenAI has no sense of the ridiculous and that can sometimes be helpful in broadening the range of ideas you may have.

You can also use GenAI tools to a piece of text or rewrite it in a particular style. They can help you with learning a topic by creating flash cards or asking you questions about the material.

You might ask for an itinerary for a place you are going to visit, an Excel formula for a calculation, or a humorous line in a leaving speech for a colleague. Don't expect it to really understand what makes humans laugh. Being a comedian is amongst the most AI-proof of professions.

For all of these tasks, you should review the outputs and expect to prompt further or make your own changes.

Things to try

  • Ask Microsoft Copilot to come up with some recipe ideas based on ingredients you do or don’t want it to use, nutritional requirements, time available etc.  What happens if you pick ingredients that don’t typically go together?
  • Use Hack Your To Do List to experiment with using GenAI to help you with some everyday tasks you might carry out.
