PEP2: Developing UCL's Curriculum Design Principles

6 November 2024

To support the next phase of the Programme Excellence Project, PEP2: Curriculum Review, we have drafted Curriculum Design Principles that will underpin the design and delivery of all UCL programmes. We would like to invite you to give feedback during a consultation period.

The Programme Excellence Project (PEP) is a comprehensive review of UCL’s undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, and one of UCL’s strategic priorities over the next five years. Now that we are entering the second phase of PEP, the Curriculum Review, we would like to gather feedback on the Curriculum Design Principles that will guide the review process. During this consultation period, we will host roundtable events to discuss the draft Principles, invite written feedback through our online survey and undertake student consultation in partnership with the Students’ Union.

What are the draft Curriculum Design Principles?

The draft Curriculum Design Principles will signal the distinctive approach we are taking to education design and delivery for all UCL programmes and identify markers of excellence. The Curriculum Design Principles have developed from conversations with the UCL community through roundtables as well as discussions with faculties, HEDS, PEP governance, Education Committee and the Students’ Union. The Students’ Union published a report in response to this: Students' Union PEP2 Consultation Response

The consultation period will close on Monday 16th December and a final version of the Curriculum Design Principles will be taken to Education Committee in January.

Join us for a roundtable event

Professor Kathryn Woods, Pro-Vice Provost Education (Student Academic Engagement), is hosting two roundtable events to discuss the draft Curriculum Design Principles and hear how plans are developing for PEP2: Curriculum Review.

The Curriculum Landscape Study

The UCL Curriculum Landscape Study gives academic and professional colleagues in departments and faculties a rich source of information to support local conversations and preparations for PEP2: Curriculum Review.

The research focuses on data and insights about our programmes, case studies to prompt further thinking (including the Research-Intensive Education case study), and the existing framework for the design and delivery of our programmes.

You can find these documents on the Programme Excellence Project SharePoint

What’s next?

Once the consultation period has ended, we will share a summary of the feedback and discussion which has taken place regarding the draft Curriculum Design Principles.

Further updates will also be provided this term detailing the next steps in preparing for the Curriculum Review and the support that will be available to departments and faculties in conducting their local review activities.

The PEP Team is working with Education Services to finalise the design of the Curriculum Review process for discussion and approval. This will provide clarity for departments and faculties on what they are being asked to do for PEP including governance arrangements, the responsibilities in relation to reviewing programmes and the templates that colleagues will be asked to submit for review.

We would like to express thanks to all colleagues who have contributed to PEP so far and for the community’s engagement in the forthcoming consultation period.
