Recruit high-performing students to your 2025 research project

29 October 2024

Do you have a project that would benefit from the research of a highly motivated undergraduate student? Submit a proposal to the Laidlaw Research and Leadership Programme by Friday 15 November.

Students laughing in a group

The Laidlaw Programme nurtures our students into the leaders and scholars of the future.

It gives current first year undergraduate students the chance to take on training and six weeks of full-time research alongside UCL academics during summer 2025.

These ambitious, high-performing students are fully funded by the scheme, and come to the researcher at no cost.

Why supervise a scholar?

This is your opportunity to gain a junior researcher from amongst the brightest of UCL’s first-year undergraduates. Undergraduate students have a chance to gain leadership skills and research experience.

The Programme awards up to £625 per supervisor to cover any project costs.

The Laidlaw Scholars Network showcases past research by Scholars from across all participating universities. Hear from Elisya Muhamad Faizul on what it means to be a UCL Laidlaw Scholar on the Network's website.

Propose a project

The project needs to:

  • Run for six weeks full time in summer 2025: the standard six weeks (Monday 16 June to Friday 25 July 2025) are preferred but this can be altered by agreement between the supervisor and the student
  • Be at a level appropriate to a bright first year undergraduate
  • Involve critical thinking skills, and enough variety to be stimulating and stretching
  • Give the student the opportunity to interact regularly with you and/or an academic team. Students find this interaction highly valuable.

We also encourage projects which have an international element (students can claim travel funding).

Next steps

Complete the proposal form for summer projects 2025 by Friday 15 November 2024.

Selected projects will be advertised to students from November 2024.

If you’re allocated a Laidlaw scholar, the student will create the proposal with you into a full project outline by the start of the summer. They will then undertake the research over the summer.
