Ways that Arena can help enhance your work as an educator this year

30 September 2024

We offer professional development support to all staff who teach and support learning. Here are some ways we can help you and your education practices.

1. Contact your faculty’s designated HEDS partnership team

Each UCL Faculty has a team who are happy to help you with practical teaching approaches, assessment, personal academic tutoring and embedding employability in your teaching.

Find out who your contacts are.

2. Explore our extensive events programme

Book onto one of our events or workshops where we share best practice in teaching and learning and discuss ideas and challenges with colleagues.

We cover a range of topics including:

  • assessment and feedback, including sessions on GenAI
  • ways to engage your students
  • designing sessions and modules
  • ways to evaluate and reflect on your teaching
  • support and wellbeing
  • supervising student research.

 3. Gain professional recognition with an Arena and AdvanceHE Fellowship

If you teach or support students’ learning at UCL or lead an area of education, work with us to achieve recognition.

This year we’re celebrating 10 years of our Fellowship scheme – since its launch there have been 2837 successful Fellowship applications!

Hear from colleagues who share their experience of gaining Fellowship and how it’s helped their work and career.

Find out more and start your accreditation journey today.

4. Browse our teaching resources

Explore our series of 90-second MicroCPD videos, along with case studies and Teaching Toolkits.

Watch the latest MicroCPD where Dr. Niall Geraghty, Lecturer Faculty of Arts & Humanities (SELCS), discusses designing a new process to assess students' wellbeing and development.

We hope these resources will provide inspiration and practical guidance. Whether you are seeking to extend your knowledge or looking for a fresh perspective on education at UCL, there is something here for you.

5. Work in partnership with your students

Work in collaboration with your students to enhance the UCL learning experience through a UCL ChangeMaker project or through the Laidlaw Fellowship Programme (for first year undergraduate students).

Upcoming ChangeMakers funding deadlines: 25 October 2024, 24 January 2025

Term one sessions:

Chat to the team! Drop in (click the link at the given time) on Friday, 4 October, 12-1pm or Thursday 10 October 3-4pm. You can also sign up for a one to one chat here.

Perhaps you would like to carry out a mini project with a student to reflect on your assessment and feedback practices? Learn more about the Teaching Dialogue opportunity here, and submit your project idea by 6th December via the online form.

6. Get a students’ perspective on your teaching

Through Student Reviewers of Teaching you are paired with two students to build a reflective dialogue about your teaching practice and the learning experience of students on the course. This fulfils the peer-dialogue requirement.

You tell us your requirements; we will match you with a student. You can apply anytime throughout the year.

7. Get support to give or receive feedback on teaching

Every member of staff with significant teaching responsibilities needs to engage with UCL’s Peer Dialogue scheme at least once a year.

Regular conversations about your teaching with colleagues is one of the best ways to enhance your work as an educator.

Peer dialogue can help you to understand best practice, support your colleagues, and gather evidence about the quality of your teaching.

Find out more about peer dialogue.

8. Keep up to date
