Arena for Postdoctoral Researchers

For postdoctoral researchers looking to develop their teaching and supervision.

If you're a postdoctoral researcher, the UCL Arena programme offers you a range of flexible opportunities for developing your teaching and supervision, and gaining a qualification to teach (UCL Arena and Higher Education Academy (HEA) fellowships)

Professional Development Programme for Postdoctoral Researchers

UCL Arena is delighted to offer a new professional development programme for Postdoctoral Rresearchers, designed to enhance your teaching, assessing and supervisory skills.

This 6-week course builds on the short Introduction to Teaching for Postdocs workshop. It combines theory, practice, research, reflection and peer support to further support skills, confidence and career development for postdoctoral research staff who are engaged with teaching and supervisory roles and responsibilities.

Course description

The course consists of six two-hour sessions, with some asynchronous work and activities. There's an opportunity to practice different teaching techniques and the course includes peer review of colleagues’ teaching practice. We will also help you begin your application for UCL Arena/HEA Fellowship at the appropriate category.

The course will cover:

  • Effective synchronous and asynchronous teaching design and delivery
  • Research-based teaching strategies and pedagogies appropriate to a range of disciplinary contexts
  • Developing competence and confidence in teaching delivery
  • Providing effective feedback to students
  • Effective practice in supervisory roles
  • Methods for evaluating teaching, supervision, and learning
  • Inclusive teaching and developing positive research cultures

Postdoctoral researchers have supported the design of the programme and we'll seek ongoing feedback as the course progresses, to ensure that this course that is tailored specifically to UCL’s postdoctoral community, in line with the aims of the Researcher Development Concordat.
