In this video: Writing effective prompts for GenAI

Large language models require you to provide prompts, and the more specific detail you can include, the more likely you are to get a result that meets your needs

Tips for generating useful outputs include the following.

  • Ask the model to adopt a persona of who is writing the text .

  • Tell the model who the audience for its output is, and the kind of language it should write in. This might be academic, businesslike, or colloquial.

  • Be specific about content. Imagine you were instructing a person who had no knowledge of your context or situation. What would you tell them to help achieve the task?

  • Provide an example of the kind of output you would like to see or a reference work, but do not upload student work or documents where you don't own the copyright.

  • Say  much text you want, with a suggested number of words or paragraphs.

  • Ask the model to repeat the instructions back to you so you can check if they are correct.

If you don't get exactly what you want first time, follow up with further prompts asking for re-writes or clarifications. For example, you might ask it to rewrite the third paragraph of an output to incorporate some additional information you supply.

Microsoft have produced some sample prompts that are relevant to higher education. A link to these is given below.

Things to know

Giving the same prompts won’t always give the same results, so you can repeat prompts to get a different output. Giving the same prompts won’t always give the same results, so you can repeat prompts to get a different output.

Things to try

Microsoft have produced some sample prompts for educators and students. These support tasks such as peer teaching, reflection and writing quizzes. Try some of these out and consider how useful the outputs you get are.
