Marshgate wins Architecture MasterPrize award
14 October 2024
The flagship building on our new UCL East campus, Marshgate, has won an Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) award in an annual international competition recognising design excellence in architecture across the world.
Marshgate is a 35,000sqm building at the heart of the UCL’s new campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is designed to support and enable new interdisciplinary ways of working with its highly flexible spaces that encourage collaboration between teaching, research, academia, industry and the public.
Designed by architects Stanton Williams, Marshgate has topped the Architecture MasterPrize Educational Building category, also gaining a ‘Best of Best’ title.
The AMP awards are dedicated to celebrating and sharing excellence in architecture, interior design, landscape design, architectural photography and architectural product design from across the globe.
Jurors score entries on design excellence across aesthetics, environmental, cultural and contextual considerations, as well as the overall originality of the project, including new, innovative technologies or creative solutions used.
The project’s practicality, and fulfilment of functional requirements, sustainability practices and overall environmental considerations are also taken into consideration.
Gaining a ‘Best of Best’ title indicates that an entry has scored highly across all criteria.
Professor Paola Lettieri FREng FIChemE, UCL Vice-President for Strategy and Pro-Provost for UCL East, said:
"UCL is reimagining the university campus of the future to create spaces where research, education, innovation and public engagement can come together across disciplines to drive discoveries and make an impact on global challenges.
"Our flagship Marshgate building on our new UCL East campus on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park illustrates this academic vision being realised under one roof. Its design encourages students, staff and the public to mix and collaborate and supports the exchange of knowledge in novel, creative and often unexpected ways.
"It is exciting to see international recognition for our innovative approach to campus design. I would like to congratulate and thank Stanton Williams on this wonderful achievement, it is a great celebration of our shared endeavour."
Narwed Khan, UCL Estates Development Manager, said:
"UCL East represents the single largest expansion of UCL in its near 200 year history, at its centre is the 35,000 sqm Marshgate building, which embodies the academic vision for the new campus while drawing inspiration from its East London context. Marshgate represents UCL's ambitions for high quality, sustainable and accessible buildings meeting the universities complex brief, providing world class architecture designed to address todays needs and adapt to those of the future."
The 2024 Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) Awards Ceremony will take place on November 18 at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain. The ceremony will celebrate the winners of both the 2023 and 2024 awards.
