Walk: Meet at Soho Square, London W1D / Talk: Slade Research Centre, Woburn Square, London, WC1H 0AB
Current knowledge of how the human mind and brain
function during navigation comes predominately from lab-based studies. To learn
about navigation in real-world action, the UCL Spatial Cognition Group is
working on fieldwork experiments based in Soho. 'Navigating SOHO: Introducing a Series of Interdisciplinary Experiments' consists of a walk in Soho (requiring sign-up) and a talk in the Slade Research Centre (no prior booking required).
Part one - From 10am participants will take part in an interactive walking
tour of Soho to demonstrate the fieldwork - technologies we have developed to
investigate spatial awareness and navigation. You are required to sign-up for this via Eventbrite (limited to 30 spaces). You will meet at 10am in Soho Square.
Part two - From 12pm in the Slade Research Centre (where the Cities Methodologies exhibition takes place), there will be a one hour talk shedding light on the theory and knowledge behind what was asked the participants to do on the walk and include methods into their own queries regarding urban navigation and spatial awareness. We will show film clips and talk about experimental design and results to date and show how participants on the walk scored in testing performance and explain each task and analysis in depth.
