12 October 2023
Professor Ben Campkin, who first became a Co-Director of UCL Urban Laboratory in 2008, has stepped down to focus on his role as Vice-Dean Public and City Engagement at The Bartlett.
Ben Campkin, one of the academic leads at UCL Urban Laboratory for fifteen years, has stepped down from his role as Co-Director. Ben was a Co-Director at Urban Lab from 2008-2011, Director from 2011-2018, and Co-Director from the end of his directorship.
Urban Lab Director, Professor Clare Melhuish thanks Ben for his tremendous contribution: “Ben Campkin has played a key role in Urban Lab’s development since the early years of its launch by Matthew Gandy. He provided invaluable leadership as Director during a formative period and has been fundamental to getting Urban Lab to where it is now, particularly with regard to its presence at UCL East and launch of our Global Urbanism MASc programme.”
"Ben made a huge contribution to establishing UCL’s role in bringing forward a framework for ethical regeneration in east London, which continued through his role as Bartlett Faculty lead for UCL East. Ben’s work continues through his work as co-convenor of East London Lab on our Master's programme, chair of UCL East’s Community Board, and new role as Vice-Dean Public and City Engagement at The Bartlett. Ben has also contributed significantly to Urban Lab’s research priority area of Queer Infrastructures and to our role in bringing equality, diversity and inclusion to the fore in university policy and governance, as well as within the field of urbanism."
Ben Campkin reflects: “It’s been a privilege to be part of Urban Lab’s leadership group since its early days. It has been inspiring to collaborate with colleagues across the university to expand the variety of our activities and to work out ways of sustaining and creating new opportunities for transdisciplinary and cross-faculty urban research, teaching and engagement.”
“I’m glad to remain connected to Urban Lab through teaching on the Global Urbanism MASc, and in my new role as Vice-Dean Public and City Engagement for The Bartlett, as we strengthen our work with partners in London."
