About me
I am a second year undergraduate student studying Astrophysics at University College London in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
When I started the secondary school I discovered my passion for Astronomy. As Astronomy was not part of the curriculum, I decided to study it on my own. Since then, I have represented Romania in four International Olympiads on Astronomy and Astrophysics. In the summer of 2008 I have decided to share my knowledge and experience with other students who have a passion for Astronomy and I founded the first Astronomy club in my home region at my high-school, “Vasile Lucaciu” National College, Baia Mare, Romania.
Maramureș
I am originally from Ocna Șugatag, a small village in Maramureș county, Romania. Maramureș is situated in the geographic centre of Europe, in North-west Transylvania. The region is known for its beautiful rural scenery, local small woodwork and craftwork industry as well as for its wooden churches, wooden gates and original rural architecture. It has carefully preserved the culture, traditions, and lifestyle of a medieval peasant past.
Visitors to Maramureș have the opportunity to step back in time and enjoy a simple life. The main attractions are: Bârsana Monastery (Orthodox monastery with church and buldings made only from wood), The Merry Cemetery of Săpânța (The interesting name comes from the blue, white, green and red colored funeral crosses, carrying cheerful lyrics inspired by memorable moments in the life of the deceased), Vaser Valley Mocănița (A steam locomotive train that runs through the mountains, along the Vaser River), The Memorial of the Victims of Communism (Sighetu Marmatiei prison which held the Romanian political figures from before 1945), The Ocna Șugatag spa (well-known for its salt water), The Sighetu Marmatiei Village Museum and The Historical town centre of Baia Mare.
