The School for the Creative and Cultural Industries is delighted to present the second screening of the SCCI Cinema Club. Taking place at the One Pool Street Cinema at UCL East, we will be hosting a series of free screenings, sharing the films that have inspired and influenced researchers, artists, and practitioners across our creative community.

Tim Beasley-Murray,  UCL Associate Professor of European Thought and Culture and programme lead for our BA in Creative Arts and Humanities, has selected Kathryn Bigelow’s Point Break, starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves.

Tim says:

“For all its fun and silliness, Point Break poses complex questions about masculinity, homosocial bonding, and the essence of the action genre.

“Yet, what really draws me to this film is its representation of different modes of game and play: Swayze’s Bodhi is the leader of a gang committed to the thrilling play of surfing and bank-robbing. Meanwhile, Reeves’s Johnny Utah is a detective  who infiltrates Bodhi’s gang by learning to surf, all the better to catch him in a different sort of game - the game of hunter and prey. This film has been an important influence on my own work on games and play, and how they can get out of hand and become serious.

“It’s more than a guilty pleasure for me and I’ll watch every time it pops up on late night TV!”

Point Break will be screened at 6.30pm and introduced by Tim Beasley-Murray. Doors open at 6pm, please aim to be seated by 6.15pm at the latest.

Rarely seen on big screens in the UK in recent years, Kathryn Bigelow’s ultimate 1990s cult classic returns with a 4K restoration! Bring your friends, family and colleagues – all are welcome.

Please note this film has an age rating of 15.
