ECON1003 - Statistical Methods in Economics

Term 1


This is a compulsory module for single-honours Economics (L100 & L101), Econ/Geog (LL17), Phil/Econ (VL51) and ESPS Economics Specialists students only. The course will cover the following topics through lectures and tutorials:

1.    Probability Basics
2.    Random Variables, Expectations
3.    Discrete/Continuous Distributions
4.    Law of Large Numbers, Central Limit Theorem
5.    Statistics Basics
6.    Point/Interval Estimation
7.    Hypothesis Testing
8.    The Linear Regression Model

In addition, students will be introduced to the Statistics software package STATA and learn its basic features and commands. There will be coordination with ECON1002; in particular, data sets used in ECON1002 will also be used in this modules’ lectures and exercises.

Taught by:
Adam Rosen
Assessment: 10 2-hour lectures, 5 demonstration classes and 5 compulsory tutorial classes with accompanying exercises. 2-hour unseen written examination in Term 3.

Prerequisites: ECON1001 must be taken concurrently
