Philanthropy is driving impact by funding new research posts

Thanks to generous gifts from corporations, trusts and foundations, and individual donors, philanthropy is enabling the establishment of new research posts across UCL. These gifts support research teams to overcome existing funding constraints and provide greater financial security so that research projects can excel.

Philanthropically funded Chairs, Fellows and research support posts add excellence to our core research power.

DeepMind Academic Fellow in Sustainable Artificial Intelligence

David Ifeoluwa Adelani DeepMind Academic Fellow
In September 2022, David Ifeoluwa Adelani (pictured left) joined the UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the DeepMind Academic Fellow in Sustainable AI. DeepMind’s generous support means that David will fulfil this role for three years. The post forms part of a broader, ongoing partnership and programme of events and outreach, which will further the objective shared by UCL and DeepMind of broadening representation within the AI and machine learning sector.

Clinical trials manager in Neurogenetic Therapies Programme

A gift from the Sigrid Rausing Trust is funding the recruitment of a clinical trials manager, as part of a five-year programme researching neurogenetic therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. The post holder will work across a portfolio of genetic therapy trials at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, with trials seeking to develop treatments for a range of devastating diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease and motor neuron disease.

HORIBA Chair in Advanced Propulsion Technologies

A gift from new donor HORIBA is supporting the UCL Advanced Propulsion Lab (APL) at UCL East through the establishment of the HORIBA Chair in Advanced Propulsion Technologies.

HORIBA, a Japanese manufacturer, is the global leader in vehicle propulsion measurement and testing systems. The new HORIBA Chair, to be recruited in 2022-23, will drive innovations in research techniques within the UCL APL.

They will help to train the next generation of specialist scientist and engineers to accelerate the move away from fossil fuels to clean energy transport options, in line with UCL’s goal to create a more sustainable world for everyone.

The new partnership between UCL and HORIBA brings together the knowledge, skills, experience and facilities to ensure that we remain at the forefront of delivering sustainable transport solutions.
