Son of Benjamin John Lawrence of The Crawl (1768-1796) and great-nephew of George Whitehorne Lawrence I of Running Gut estate (d. 1783).
Son of Comfort Ann Hind and Benjamin Lawrence, his father died when he was a child and his mother remarried to John Taylor. His step-father took control of his affairs.

Confirmation 20/07/1874 of Commissariot of Dumfries 16/07/1874 of Benjamin James Lawrence son and executor nominate of George Whitehorn [sic] Lawrence sometime of Largnean in Kircudbright but lately of Robgill Tower Dumfries who died 21/06/1874.
In 1861 George W. Lawrence aged 66 born Jamaica, 'gentleman, landed proprietor' Jane F. Lawrence aged 63, Anne and Jane F. Lawrence were living with servants at 48 Canning Street Liverpool.
