Resident slave-owner in Jamaica, father of Catherine Cole Johnston nee Taylor (q.v.), and guardian of George Whitehorne Lawrence II (q.v.), dying between 1811 and 1815.
There are papers of John Taylor held among the Powel Family Papers held by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, http://hsp.org/sites/default/files/legacy_files/migrated/findingaid1582powel.pdf [accessed 27/04/2018]. The notes to the papers [p. 4] say that John Taylor owned two plantations, Harmony Hill and Running Gut, in St Ann's., but the Accounts Produce records are clear that Running Gut was in the hand of John Taylor as guardian of George Whitehorne Lawrence II (q.v.). Nevertheless, Robert Johnston, who had married John Taylor's daughter Catherine Cole Taylor, made a counter-claim for the compensation for the enslaved people on Running Gut by virtue of his wife's status as residuary legatee of her father: the counter-claim was rejected.
