John Morant V

1755 - 1794

Biography

Son of Edward Morant MP (d. 1791, q.v.), half-brother of Edward Morant Gale (q.v.) and father of John Morant VI (q.v.).

  1. Will of John Morant of Brockenhurst [made 02/12/1791] proved 15/04/1794. He left to his wife his leasehold houses at Manchester Square and Ditton in Surrey, and gave her the right to live at his house in Park Lane where his father had resided (the Brockenhurst estate in Hampshire and the West India estates and enslaved people had been entailed by his father Edward and did not form part of his own property). He left his son John £20,000 at 21 and his wife an annuity of £2000 p.a., which he stipulated in a Memorandum also dated 02/12/1791 should be reduced to £1000 if she remarried. In a codicil of 1792 he said he had utilised a power under the will of his father to execute a deed securing an annuity of £1200 p.a. to his wife on his Jamaica estates, and reduced the annuity under the will to £800 p.a. He made his residuary heirs his younger sons Edward and George.
