Edward Morant MP

1730 - 1791

Biography

MP for Hindon (1761-1768), Lymington (1774-1780) and Yarmouth I.o.W. (1780-1787). Son of John Morant I of Jamaica (d. 1734), and father of John Morant II and Edward Gregory Morant Gale (each of whom q.v.). Born in Jamaica, came to Britain 1759, bought Brockenhurst and two contiguous estates 1770-1771. The income from his estates in Jamaica reportedly averaged £20,000 p.a. 1733-1791.

  1. Edward, son of John and Mary Morant, baptised in Clarendon, Jamaica, 10/12/1730.

  2. Will of Edward Morant of Brockenhurst [made in 1777] proved 11/08/1791. In the will he left his wife £1000 and an annuity of £300 p.a., and £500 p.a. to his son Edward Gregory Morant over and above his entitlement under his [Edward Gregory Morant's] parents' marriage settlement, with the proviso that if Edward Morant's eldest son John came into possession of the estate of William Gale of Jamaica, then Edward Gregory Morant's annuity would increase by further £200 p.a. He left his own real estate in Jamaica and Britain in entail to his son John Morant and his heirs with remainder to Edward Gregory Morant. In a codicil of 1783 he left a further annuity of £500 p.a. to his son Edward Gregory Morant secured on the Mount Hindmost estate in Clarendon 'now in possession of Ann McGilchrist widow,' and in a further codicil of 1784 he left all his revisionary interest in the Mount Hindmost estate to Edward Gregory Morant, and an annuity of £50 p.a. and a lump sum of £100 at 21 (due in or around 1791) to a boy named James Price in Jamaica. In 1790 he made a further amendment, specifying that the annuity of £500 p.a to his son Edward Gregory Morant for life under his will should only last until 1796, when his son would inherit the York estate, which had not been bequeathed to him when Edward Morant made his original will.
