Visit UCL Grant Museum of Zoology

Planning a visit? Here is everything you need to know.

Entry and admission

Entry to the museum is free. Booking is not required, unless attending for research or if you have a group larger than 10 people.

During busy periods

If the museum reaches capacity, we will operate a one-in, one out queuing system and you will be asked to queue outside. Wait times are unlikely to exceed 5-10 minutes outside of school holiday periods. 

Opening times

Open to the public

  • Tuesday - Friday: 1pm–5pm.
  • Saturday: 11am–5pm
  • Closed Monday and Sunday.

Research visits

  • Monday - Friday: 10am–1pm

Advanced booking is required for research visits.

We recommend using public transport to visit the museum, where possible. Please visit Transport for London for detailed travel advice.

By public transport

We are located a short distance from the following London Underground stations:

  • Euston Square (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan): 160m
  • Warren Street (Northern, Victoria): 320m
  • Goodge Street (Northern): 480m
  • Euston (Northern, Victoria, National Rail Services): 480m
  • Russell Square (Piccadilly): 970m

Bus routes 1, 18, 24, 29, 30, 68, 91 and 134 all stop within walking distance.

By car

Vehicle access to University College London is restricted. If driving, we recommend visitors park in the pay & display car parks surrounding the university.

Limited onsite accessible parking can be booked in advance on a first-come, first-served basis. There are several drop-off / pick-up locations for visitors who require either a kerb or drop kerb when alighting from their vehicle.

Facilities

Toilets

Single-sex toilet facilities a gender-neutral accessible toilet and baby care cubicle are available via key access from the museum. Please speak to a member of our visitor services team at the welcome desk for access to these facilities.

Shop

Our onsite shop has a range of gifts and souvenirs to suit all ages and pockets from books and postcards to exclusive products inspired by our collection, including Jar of Moles themed merchandise. Our affordable 3D printed specimens even allow you to start your own zoology collection at home!

Every purchase supports the museum.

Group and school bookings

The Grant Museum welcomes visits by private groups and organisations from all demographics. Booking is essential for groups of eight or more, please contact museums@ucl.ac.uk to book a visit slot. For the comfort of our visitors, we are unable to accommodate groups larger than twenty.

Self-guided group visits are free, but we appreciate donations to support our work.

Food and drink

We allow bottled water and baby bottles in the museum galleries. Please note all other food and drink are not permitted.

Baby feeding

Breastfeeding and bottle feeding are welcome in our museum spaces. A baby care cubicle can be accessed via a swipe door adjacent to the museum entrance. Please speak with a member of our visitor services team for access, or if you would prefer a quieter space with greater privacy. Private spaces are subject to use and may not always be available.


FAQs

 How long can I stay during my visit?

There is no maximum visit time, and all visitors are welcome to explore our galleries until the museum closes.

Can I bring a group?

The Grant Museum welcomes and encourages group visits from all demographics. Booking is essential for groups of eight or more. Please refer to our group and school bookings section for further information.

Do you have a lost property area?

Please contact our museum visitor services team for all lost property enquiries.

What size bag can I bring?

The Grant Museum does not have a cloakroom and we request that visitors avoid bringing large bags and suitcases where possible. We are unable to permit bikes in the museum, however, bike storage is available across UCL’s campus.

Photography?

Visitors are welcome to take photographs and videography for personal use only. Flash photography, photo shoots, tripods, selfie sticks, and video live streams are not permitted without prior agreement.

Photographs and videography taken inside the museum may not be used for commercial purposes without prior agreement and may be subject to a licensing fee. Please contact us at museums@ucl.ac.uk for further information.

Do I need to wear a face mask?

In line with current UK Government guidance, face coverings are not mandatory, but visitors are welcome to wear them. Hand sanitiser is available at our welcome desk.

Refreshments?

The Grant Museum has no onsite café; however, refreshments are available from nearby food and drink outlets situated in the local area.

Water bottles can be refilled for free. Museum staff will gladly direct you to the nearest drinks fountain.
