Our annual Careers Week took place from June 3-7, 2024. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

 

Welcome to the Department of Political Science Careers Week 2024 #BelieveYouCan! 

The Department of Political Science is back for another week of inspirational speakers, alumni panels and skills workshops!

Since its inception, thousands of students have actively participated in our Political Science Careers Week, and we couldn't be more thrilled to host our alumni and experts again this year. Our motto for this year encapsulates our belief in the power of self-confidence and determination: "Believe you can!"

This motto embodies the essence of our event, inspiring students to embrace their potential and believe in their capacity to make a difference. Through our interactive programme, we aim to instil in each participant the confidence to pursue their aspirations and contribute meaningfully to the world of politics and beyond. 

Join us on this journey and discover new ideas and avenues that you may not have previously considered, learn about the many places for your talents in the marketplace, and build the skills to march forward into that marketplace confidently.

MONDAY 3rd June  Security and Technology

9:30-11:00 Risk & Resilience: Get into Geopolitical Risk & Security

Join us for this panel discussion on careers in geopolitical risk and security. Get an insight into what working in political risk entails and gain some top tips for getting into the industry. Our panellists will discuss their careers and how they are working to solve the world’s most challenging and important problems through using methods such as marketing and communications, open-source intelligence and political psychology. Come along to find out about this exciting and ever-changing security domain!

Panellists:

Pippa Gordon

Pippa is a Geopolitical Analysis Manager at M&C Saatchi World Services where she leads a team conducting in-depth geopolitical analysis to support strategic communications campaigns. Prior to her current role Pippa was an Intelligence Analyst at Prevail Partners. She holds and MA in Politics & International Relations with Arabic from the University of Edinburgh.

Frank Fraser

Frank is an Embedded Analyst at Apple from Sibylline, as part of the Global Intelligence Threat Monitoring Team. This role involves the prediction, identification, and assessment of threats from across the risk spectrum to Apple's assets globally. Frank Previously worked as part of Control Risk's Dedicated Threat Intelligence team, with a focus on threats of violence from individuals. Frank studied Security Studies at UCL, graduating 2020.

Harry W. Fletcher

Harry W. Fletcher is a Senior Intelligence Analyst at Prevail Partners Limited. He is also an associate lecturer in Political Psychology at Arden University. Harry is an author in Political Theory and Political Psychology, including identity politics and cognitive dissonance in political decision making.

Jasper Simon

Jasper holds an MSc in Global Governance and Ethics from UCL. After graduating, he spent two years at a GovTech startup, providing consultancy services and developing digital solutions for improved data governance and knowledge management for both international and domestic public policy. After two years in this role, he then shifted to Ofgem, the UK's energy regulator, where he work in the Energy Systems Management & Security portfolio with a focus on cross-border market arrangements for electricity interconnectors. Specifically, Jasper’s work involves fulfiling a number of statutory regulatory obligations, as well as working alongside of other key stakeholders (e.g DESNZ, National Grid, ESO) to ensure the continued energy security of the UK as the energy landscape and geopolitical context across Europe continue to change.

11:30-1:00  The Digital State: Transforming Governments Through Tech & Innovation

In this session we will explore the topic of innovation, and what it takes to have a thriving innovation culture and capability within an organisation. We’ll talk tech, including Cloud, Connectivity, Cybersecurity, Compute and AI, and how emerging and evolving technologies such as GenAI can transform Governments services. We’ll break out into smaller groups to discuss and debate the challenges governments face when adopting technology, and ideate on how best to overcome these. And we’ll talk about careers at the intersection of IT & politics and how technology is transforming everyday tasks and changing the job landscape of the future.

Presenter: Roger Williams moderated by Dr Melanie Garson

Roger Williams is the Director of the Global Innovation Unit at TBI, and leads the Institute’s strategy on engaging Technology Partners to deliver innovation and digital transformation for governments. He is an Innovation Strategist with a track record of leading change to create and capture new value for organisations and governments. With a software development background, Roger understands how technology can be designed, developed and deployed to deliver measurable value. And with extensive experience leading large scale transformation projects, he is able to leverage the methodologies, practices and tools to accelerate results and impact. Roger spent 16 years at IBM where he established and led the IBM Garage, a multi-disciplinary team designed to deliver digital transformation and innovation using Cloud technologies, agile practices, and human-centred design principles. Roger has a master’s degree (Distinction) in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies. He was born in Trinidad & Tobago, relocated to the US in 1999 then immigrated to the UK in 2023. He is married with 3 children, a passionate footballer, competent sailor, avid golfer and international traveller.

2:00-3:30 Navigating Digital Threats and Building Resilience: In conversation with Protection Group International

In this Employer Presentation from PGI (Protection Group International), we will learn from members of the PGI team that help the company’s mission to protect organisations and nations from cyber threats and online harm. PGI works at the cutting-edge of threat detection and are continually scanning the horizon for next-generation risks. The team uses expert human insight, supported by. technology, to build long-range resilience for clients internationally. 4:00-5:00 Tech Trailblazers: Careers in Tech and Digital Policy

Join us for what promises to be an incredibly insightful panel discussion on careers in tech and digital policy. Our panellists will share with you how to carve out a career path in this growing sector, drawing on their own career experiences. From tech companies to government organizations, our panellists will discuss the diverse opportunities available, the skills needed to succeed, and the future of tech and digital policy. Don't miss this chance to gain valuable insights and connect with industry professionals shaping the tech and digital world.

Panellists:

Theresa Dümchen is a policy advisor to tech companies with a focus on cyber, AI and public sector digitisation policy. She began her career at the German development agency GIZ, contributing to the rapid digitisation of development and economic cooperation amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. She further pursued her passion for tech-for-good by completing a master’s degree in international public policy, specialising in tech policy at UCL. Subsequently, she worked as a cyber threat intelligence researcher at Protection Group International and Control Risks. There, her role involved analysing the patterns of online extremism and providing guidance to clients regarding potential threats to their businesses. In 2022, Theresa joined Global Counsel, assuming the dual responsibilities of a tech policy and business development associate. She leads on UK cyber policy issues while also engaging with prominent multinational tech companies on matters related to data, AI, and government digitisation. 

Tom Scott

Starting his career in the Government Office for Science, Tom worked directly with former Government Chief Scientific Advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance, to support the development of flagship technology policies such as the UK Science and Technology Framework, the National Quantum Strategy and National Semiconductor Strategy. In 2022, Tom moved to the Department for International Trade (now Business and Trade - DBT) to focus on the commercial aspects of technology policy. This involved shaping and influencing economic security policy and regulation (National Security and Investment Act, UK export controls, the AI Regulation White Paper) to support the growth of the UK’s emerging technology sector, specifically in quantum technology and semiconductors. Tom also has experience working directly with companies such as Siemens Energy, Santander and Leonardo to promote strategic private investment into the UK technology sector. Tom has recently taken a role as Head of Science Strategy and Engagement in DBT to oversee the Department’s science and technology research and development strategy ahead of the next spending review.

Mason Hurlocker is currently working as a Cybersecurity Policy Consultant at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is an independent researcher at the Center for Peace Communications. He is a researcher and educator with experience covering a range of geopolitical and security issues. Mason completed an MSc in Security Studies at University College London (UCL), where he received distinction. He previously studied for his BA at Occidental College in Los Angeles, majoring in Diplomacy & World Affairs. Thematically, his primary research interests include security policy, democracy, and the geopolitics of emerging technologies.

5:30-7:00 Women in Code & Currency with Elise Soucie & Julia Babahina moderated by Dr Melanie Garson

This exciting event promises to give an insight into the intersection between finance and technology. Our all-female panel, including Elise Soucie and Julia Babahina, will give us a glimpse into a ‘day’ working in their respective domains. Our panellists are women pioneers in the tech industry – both of whom have gained recognition for their work empowering and supporting women in technology careers.

Elise Soucie is the Director of Global Policy & Regulatory Affairs for Global Digital Finance. Elise was formerly an Associate Director at the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME) where she lead the division’s Digital Assets and Data Strategy work, with a focus on emerging regulation such as the Market in Crypto Assets (MiCA) legislation and the European Commission’s targeted consultation on open finance and data sharing in the financial sector. Furthermore, she also worked closely with global standard setters, driving and guiding engagement between the capital markets industry and bodies such as the FSB and IOSCO. Prior to her work at AFME, Elise was in the public sector, working at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in both their Technology, Resilience and Cyber Division and International Division. Notably she pioneered the FCA’s International Digital Assets strategy in 2022 and led technical policy dialogue on DLT, Consumer Risks, Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC’s), and Decentralised Finance (DeFi), among other topics. Elise was named ‘Next Generation Leader of the Year’ at the 2022 Women in Finance Awards UK. Elise’s experience with both the public and private sector enables her to support members in their engagement with policy makers around the globe. She has experience in both drafting and advocating for regulatory outcomes that will support the development of the digital assets ecosystem, and her technical understanding of the industry makes her well suited to represent the membership of Global Digital Finance.

Julia Babahina graduated from UCL in 2013 where she was reading MSc in International Public Policy. Now she is a Lead Risk Management Specialist at Swift for Product and Strategy and has almost ten years of experience in Information Security, IT and Technology. Over the years she worked in numerous financial service organisations where she defined and delivered privacy and data programmes, cyber security and data strategies, policy frameworks and assisted organisations in governing IT risks and controls. She is dedicated to guiding businesses in delivering proportionate and risk aware IT response in line with business goals, compliance requirements and regulations. She is also a Director at Women Coding Community and is passionate about giving back to community and empowering women to excel in technology careers.

9:30-11:00 CVs and Applications with Hilary Moor

Fed up with spending hours crafting your application and CV only to hear nothing back from the employer?  Then it’s time to change your approach. In this workshop Hilary Moor explains how to tailor applications and increase your chances at landing your dream job. What are employers really looking for in a job application?  How do you write a strong motivation statement and answer those “example” questions?  How does a cover letter complement a CV and how do you make yours stand out?   We’ll look at a view examples to see what works – and what doesn’t work – in applications.

11:30-1:00 UNCovered: Insider Tips for Launching Your UN Career

Many politics students dream of a career in the United Nations, drawn to the organisation's global impact and mission for peace and development. But how do you turn this dream into reality? In this panel, we discuss the different positions and pathways into the UN. Our expert panel will provide a detailed insight into the UN funds and programmes, offering invaluable guidance on navigating the diverse routes into various agencies. Additionally, we'll explore essential skills and experiences sought by UN recruiters, share tips for crafting standout applications, and provide general advice for breaking into international organisations.

Panellists:

Nicholas Rosellini served as UN Resident Coordinator and highest level representative of the UN in China from 2016 until his retirement.  Prior to this, he served as UNDP Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific and also as Director of the Bangkok Regional Hub.  He has also served as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Bhutan; and previously in various capacities in UNDP in including: Director, Office of the Assistant Administrator; Deputy Resident Representative, Viet Nam; Assistant Resident Representative, Pakistan; Programme Advisor, Ethiopia; and Programme Officer, Ghana.

Titi Oyejola worked for the United Nations and national governments of the United Kingdom and Nigeria in representational, managerial and regular positions in communication, programme/operations management and coordination in ten different country operations. She was head of UNHCR operations in two separate refugee camps and the Head of UN Resident Coordinators Office in Peace Keeping operations. She was the Chief of Joint Operations Center and Deputy Chief of the Joint Mission Analysis Center in the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

John Cubbon was called the Bar of England and Wales in 1993 and is a practising barrister.  He held legal positions in the United Nations for over 19 years. From 1995 to 2006 he worked in the UN peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo dealing for the most part with judicial, criminal and human rights issues as well as questions related to the privileges and immunities of the UN. He served from 2006 to 2014 as Senior Legal Officer, and in 2014 and 2015 as Acting Director, of Chambers at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

14:00-15:00 - Working in the EU institutions and on Europe in the UK Civil Service 

Are you curious about how you can be part of a political institution in Europe? Or how you can harness your political science degree to launch a career in the EU? Join us for a session about working in EU institutions and on Europe in the UK Civil Service. This panel discussion includes Marit Sillavee, an EU Diplomat, and Thomas Lambert, a member of the FCDO working for the Europe Group. This event promises to give exciting insight into what working within Europe entails and how the civil service can intersect with international institutions.

Marit Sillavee, First Secretary, Citizens, Social and Justice and Home Affairs Section, EU Delegation to the United Kingdom

Marit Sillavee is an EU diplomat with over 15 years of professional experience in communications and outreach, public relations and political communication, capability building and stakeholder engagement in London, Brussels and Tallinn. She is currently working on EU citizens’ rights issues at the EU Delegation in the UK, bringing together EU Member States and NGOs representing EU citizens in the UK, and coordinating the relationship with the relevant counterparts in the UK Government and both Houses of the Parliament. In her previous role in Brussels, she was a member of the Cabinet of the European Commission President, working directly with the Head of Cabinet advising him on strategic communication, prepared briefings and coordinated the preparation of communication materials ahead of key communication moments of the European Commission President. Before joining the Commission she worked in London for a reputation management consultancy advising FTSE 100 companies on reputation management, stakeholder engagement and leadership development, running workshops and helping companies to collect measurable data on their reputation among their key stakeholders. She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Public Relations from the University of Tartu in Estonia and she also holds a MSc in Communication Regulation and Policy from the London School of Economics. She spent 6 months in Beijing learning Mandarin which she found easier to learn than French.

Thomas Lambert - Deputy Head of Strategic Communications and Engagement, EU Directorate, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office

Thomas Lambert is the Deputy Head of Strategic Communications and Engagement, EU Directorate, in the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Before working at the FCDO, Tom was Senior Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Housing and worked as a Press Officer in a government Press Office. Prior to joining the Civil Service, he worked as a Teacher’s Assistant at a prep school after studying Politics and American Studies at the University of Nottingham with a year abroad at the George Bush School of Politics at Texas A+M University, graduating in 2016. Tom is from Kent and attended Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys.

15:15–16:15 - Alumni Panel: Building a Career in Brussels

This session, comprised of UCL alumni, explores how our panellists have found themselves working in Brussels, the headquarters of the European Commission and a central location for key international institutions. Panellists will uncover their career development and give insight into what working for international institutions and corporations entails. Come along to find out about the most important ingredients for success and how you can build a career in Brussels.

Panellists:

Zymante Zemaityte – Policy Officer, European Commission (DG NEAR)

Zymante Zemaityte graduated from UCL with MSc in International Public Policy in 2018. After graduation she worked as a Policy Assistant (Trainee) at the Lithuanian Embassy in London focusing on political and economic affairs. In 2019 she started her career at the European Commission, DG NEAR as a Blue Book trainee working on Ukraine and its reform agenda. She then moved to DG's horizontal Briefings team and supported work on Neighbourhood and Enlargement negotiations writing briefings and speeches for Senior Management, including the Commissioner. For the past three years Zymante has been working on issues related to Democracy and Rule of Law in candidate countries and has been supporting the launch of accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia in 2022 and most recently - prep works for the opening of accession talks with Moldova and Ukraine.

Lukas Maly - Associate Legal Counsel, EU Legal Affairs, Google

Lukas Maly graduated from UCL with LLB Law with French Law in 2013. Following a Master’s law degree at the University of Oxford, he spent the next seven years working as a lawyer focusing on EU regulation, first in London and then Brussels. In 2022, Lukas joined the Brussels office of Google. His role is to provide legal advice on emerging EU tech legislation, such as the AI Act.

Marta Zakrzewska - Economic Analyst, European Commission (DG ECFIN)

Marta graduated from UCL in 2017 with an MA in Economics, States and Societies. Following her graduation she moved to Brussels where she started her career at an EU-policy focused think-tank, the European Policy Centre. She joined the Commission in 2019 where she first worked at the Directorate General for European Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, focusing on the EU Neighbourhood East. She then moved to work in the Directorate General for Economic and Financial affairs where she is until today, working on the recovery and resilience plan for Bulgaria as well as the country’s eurozone accession process. Marta’s background is in history and economic policy. Along with her EU-based career, she continues her studies, pursuing a post-graduate diploma in economic policy at the Centre for Financial and Management Studies, London.

This panel discussion promises to give insight into how working in the UN can protect and secure those at risk. With the multitude of tragic conflicts and crises currently ravaging across the globe, come along to find out how a career in the United Nations can provide you with the tools to tackle issues and work towards a better future.

Ariane Maixandeau

Ariane Maixandeau is an Associate Humanitarian Affairs Officer at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Kyiv, Ukraine. Ariane is devoting her career to assisting people during humanitarian crises and emergencies.

Lila Carrée

Lila Carrée is an experienced humanitarian professional with eight years of expertise across Gabon, Vietnam, Nigeria, Yemen, and Ukraine. Her focus areas encompass International Humanitarian Law (IHL), International Human Rights Law (IHRL) and Gender in Conflicts. With roles including Gender in Humanitarian Action Specialist with UN Women in Kyiv, leading emergency programs in Ukraine, Yemen, and Nigeria with ACTED, and conducting research on human rights abuses for the EU Delegation and FCDO, Lila ensures the protection of civilians and upholds the rights of vulnerable populations, leveraging her knowledge of legal frameworks. Beyond her professional endeavours, she thrives on adventure, scaling mountains, immersing herself in literature, writing, cooking, language learning, and indulging in her passion for cinema, particularly South Korean and Danish thrillers.

Andrea Caflish

Andrea is a Programme Coordinator at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), specializing in post-conflict transition, migration and forced displacement, humanitarian protection, and disaster relief. With several years of field experience as an analyst and programme manager, Andrea has contributed significantly to IOM's missions in South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Haiti.

 

Hugo Bourhis

Hugo Bourhis is currently a Nutrition and Climate Change Consultant at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). In this capacity, he is addressing the nexus of climate change, biodiversity and nutrition, to guide the transformation of agrifood systems and deliver solutions that simultaneously address these interconnected and mutually reinforcing crises. More recently, he focuses on the revival of the CBD's Initiative on Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition and the development of a global assessment on the topic. Prior to joining the Food and Nutrition Division of FAO, he worked in the Land and Water Division of FAO as well as at the UN and UNESCO headquarters. Hugo holds an MA from King's College London in Environmental Policy and an MSc from UCL in Global Governance and Ethics.

WEDNESDAY 5th June   Civil Service, Policy and Think Tanks

Prior to joining the civil service, Shaye worked in various communications roles at UCL and worked as a private secretary to UCL’s very own Dr Melanie Garson. Shaye holds a MSc in Security Studies from UCL and a BA in History & Politics from the University of Sheffield.

11:30-1:00 “Shaping the Nation: Career Pathways in the UK Civil Service” Alumni Panel

In this panel, we delve into the UK Civil Service through the experiences of four alumni working in different government departments. We’ll explore the diverse roles available, from administrative positions to specialist roles in policy, economics, science, and IT. Our panellists will share insights on working in their departments, career progression, professional development opportunities, and the Fast Stream program.

Panellists:

Shaye Mistry

Shaye works at the Department for Business and Trade as a Stakeholder Engagement and Briefing Officer focusing on UK-India Trade Negotiations. In this role he fosters relationships with key stakeholders central to maintaining UK-India trade negotiations. Prior to joining the civil service, Shaye worked in various communications roles at UCL and worked as a private secretary to UCL’s very own Dr Melanie Garson. Shaye holds a MSc in Security Studies from UCL and a BA in History & Politics from the University of Sheffield.

Lucy Dobson

Currently working as Head of Team in the Cabinet Office, Lucy has held numerous roles in both the Cabinet Office and the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office. Focusing on navigating and delivering high profile and complex policy issues Lucy has a wealth of experience across departments in the civil service. Prior to joining the Civil Service, Lucy studied for an MSc in Security Studies at UCL and holds a BA from the University of Nottingham in American and Canadian History, Literature and Culture.

Annabelle Gouache

Annabelle is a policy advisor in cyber resilience, specifically working on the NIS Regulations, at the Department of Science Innovation and Technology. She graduated with a MSc in Security Studies in 2023 and chose cyber policy after competing in the Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge in 2022 with UCL. She has also extensively worked in political risk and intelligence during her studies.

James Fosbery

James Fosbery is currently working in Parliamentary Communications in the Cabinet Office. He is about to move to the FCDO on loan from the Cabinet Office. He joined the civil service in 2022 working in the UK Honours System Department of the Cabinet Office. James has been part of the Great British Skeleton Development Squad and manages to be a high-level athlete alongside his career in the civil service. Before joining the civil service, James studied Geography at UCL.

2:00-3:30 Beyond Academia: UCL Alumni in Think Tanks and Policy

In this session, we will delve into the exciting world of think tanks and explore what it takes to thrive in this intellectually stimulating environment. We’ll discuss the essential qualities that make a successful think tank professional, and hear from UCL alumni about their journeys from university to influential roles in think tanks.

Our speakers will share their diverse experiences and insights, highlighting the impact of their work on public policy and societal change. We will cover a range of topics, including the role of research and analysis, the importance of strategic communication, and the ways in which think tanks influence decision-making processes. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in interactive discussions, exploring the challenges and opportunities within the think tank sector. Daniel Clarke is Policy Manager for International Policy and Trade, techUK  Dan joined techUK as a Policy Manager for International Policy and Trade in March 2023. Before techUK, Dan worked for data and consulting company GlobalData as an analyst of tech and geopolitics. He has also worked in public affairs, political polling, and has written freelance for the New Statesman and Investment Monitor. Dan has a degree in MSc International Public Policy from University College London, and a BA Geography degree from the University of Sussex. Outside of work, Dan is a big fan of football, cooking, going to see live music, and reading about international affairs.

Funbi Akinsanya is the Public Relations and Social Media Lead on the Executive Committee at British Nigeria Law Forum. Funbi has a strong academic foundation in Global Governance and Ethics (MSc, UCL) and a background in Law with Social Sciences (University of Warwick). She works as a Junior Consultant at Montenero Consulting Limited, where she helps clients achieve remarkable podcast growth and impact. She has also worked with and supported trade lawyers, drafting FTA and quality assuring technical compliance reports. As a passionate professional and social impact advocate, Funbi has been recognised among the Top 100 Young People of African Descent in 2020/2021 by Powerlist, and co-authored a forthcoming case study on the closure of Kids Company. She also volunteers with Bridges Volunteers in Newham, London, and previously voluntered for Youth In Diaspora in Lagos, Nigeria, contributing to community development and education access. Additionally, Funbi is a member of the Common Futures Conversation at Chatham House, expanding her professional network and global perspective. Funbi believes in adopting a holistic approach to policy recommendations, and aspires to create context-specific solutions that drive sustainable development.

Munkhbayar Bayartsengel Elkins

Munkhbayar is currently working as a Senior Research and Policy Officer at Sense about Science. In this role he works closely with decision-makers, world-leading researchers and the public to raise the standard of evidence in public life. His work focuses on how to equip society with the right skills to scrutinise 21st century decision-making. Munkhbayar holds a MSc in Security Studies from UCL.

Peaches Brown-Senior

Peaches is a Communications Officer at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). She works in the Middle East and North Africa, including responding to the Israel and Gaza crisis. After completing her MSc in Global Governance and Ethics at UCL, she got her foot in the civil service door by taking place in the Government Communication Service Internship for diverse candidates (Peaches is Black and from a low socio-economic background). She was placed in the Department of Health and Social Care’s (DHSC) Press Office during the pandemic for her internship and then secured a Media Executive role there afterwards. Peaches then moved from government communications into government policy roles. First as a Public Health Policy Manager at DHSC, and then as a Sanctions Policy Officer at FCDO. Her experiences in policy and communications in the civil service both internationally and domestically, provide her with a wealth of experience for her career aspiration to become a diplomat for the British government.

David Alex Mendelson

David Alex Mendelson is the son of two musicians who escaped the Soviet bloc during the Cold War. From a young age he was interested in the dynamics of the Cold War, international relations and spy craft.  He lived and studied in The Hague, Hong Kong and London. His academic interest lies in the political-economic re-emergence of China on the global stage and the security dynamics of the Ukraine-Russia conflict. He has worked with government, at two international organisations and has co-authored an academic book on the Dutch intelligence agency. He currently works in the investment migration sector, at a corporate intelligence firm as a due diligence analyst in London. In his day-to-day he utilises both Osint and Humint ttp’s. His work involves offshore jurisdictions, company structures, political exposure, money laundering and sanctions evasion.

Maria Hadzhieva

Maria Hadzhieva is an Associate Manager at CT Group. CT Group is a global consultancy that combines expertise in research, intelligence, campaigns, and advisory services. Maria leads research and campaign projects for political and corporate clients across the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean. Maria’s areas of work include analysis of public political attitudes, reputation management, policy and industry research (defence, tourism, finance, environment, infrastructure development). Prior to her career at CT Group, Maria completed an MSc in International Public Policy at UCL.

Olivia Winther

Olivia Winther is an insurance professional specializing in terrorism and political violence. Currently working as an Underwriter at Arch Insurance International, Olivia has swiftly progressed from an Assistant Underwriter role. Prior to joining Arch International, Olivia worked as an Underwriting Assistant at SCOR, where she played a pivotal role in risk analysis, exposure management, and stakeholder liaison for the Terrorism and Political Violence team. Olivia holds a MSc in Security Studies from UCL and a BA in Theology from the University of Bristol.

Jeanne Soulard

Gareth Westwood

Gareth Westwood is Sibylline’s Head of Global Intelligence, based in London, and has extensive experience across the security intelligence industry, in both the public and private sectors. He joined the company following a period in which he built and managed the Global Intelligence function at AstraZeneca - a major, multi-national pharmaceutical firm. Prior to this, and following a short career in teaching, Gareth worked within the UK government as both a military intelligence specialist and a security intelligence advisor, contracted to the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). During this time, Gareth took on a variety of senior analytical roles and conducted multiple tours of Iraq, working in a counter-terrorism capacity alongside elite UK military units. Whilst working with the FCDO, Gareth was based out of UK Diplomatic Missions overseas, including prolonged periods living and working in both Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he become a recognised regional SME.Gareth is a current military reservist where he is regularly leveraged to provide support to ongoing operations. He is a member of the Association of International Risk Intelligence Professionals, The Security Institute and has degrees in both Music and International Relations.

Denise Schipani

Denise Schipani has joined Sibylline as an Associate Analyst based in London. Denise has prior experience working as a Threat Intelligence Researcher, where she identified and assessed high-risk individuals often affiliated with extremist far-right groups. She also has experience in providing technical advice to integrate cyber security solutions in customers’ environments, log analysis, and managing cyber incidents. Denise has a Master’s degree in Security Studies from UCL, where she researched the potential of climate mitigating policies in preventing the outbreak of climate-related violence. She also holds a BA in International Relations and Chinese, having studied Chinese at Beijing Normal University. In her free time, Denise enjoys going to ballet classes and watching ballet performances, as well as cooking new vegetarian and vegan recipes, trying new restaurants, travelling, and reading.

Harry Roxburgh

Harry joined Nepean shortly after it was founded and has since gone on to work with a variety of clients across alternative assets, tech, aviation, financial services and luxury. Harry works advising clients on a range of matters, from narrative development, transactions, crisis management and digital communications, the latter being a practice area he leads in. Harry has particular expertise in helping businesses leverage cinematic storytelling to drive decision-making, engage hard-to-reach stakeholders and shift the conversation. Harry studied Security Studies MSc at UCL.

Alex Willis

After graduating with a BSc in Politics and International Relations from UCL in 2022, I started an internship in the FCDO Press Team before being redeployed onto the Royal Funeral Unit to organise the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. I then completed a master's in Political Communications at LSE whilst working for a communications consultancy in the renewable energy sector. In September 2023, I started a permanent role in the COBR Unit in the Cabinet Office. My day-to-day role is the Crisis Management Policy Lead, during emergencies I'm part of the national crisis response team and recently I covered as the Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Attaché in Downing Street.

Theo Bamber

Theo is a strategic communications specialist, with broad and varied experience across public affairs and media relations projects. Prior to joining Blakeney, he worked at two of the world’s largest strategic communications consultancies – FTI Consulting, and Weber Shandwick. Theo leads teams delivering a range of communications and public affairs advisory briefs, often with a policy development element, working with clients across sectors including energy, entertainment, food production, infrastructure, and finance. He also has extensive experience in advising companies on internal governance and reputational issues and has delivered parliamentary select committee and media training programmes for senior business leaders. Theo has worked in strategic and operational roles in the hospitality sector for some of London’s leading restaurant groups and began his professional career as a classical singer. He holds an MSc in International Public Policy from UCL, and BMus from the Royal College of Music.

Viktoria Zeybrandt 

Victoria is the Director of Communications and Operations at cross-party think tank Policy Connect, sitting within the central team of the organisation. She leads the communications team and works with each policy team to deliver policy projects and translating research to impactful policy recommendations to inform the UK Government. This includes working within the policy areas of health, sustainability, accessibility, AI, manufacturing, education and skills, and accessibility as well as working closely with parliamentarians and stakeholders through APPGs and engaging press. Additionally, Victoria supports universities by delivering policy training, supporting academics with navigating the political system, the policy cycle and how to effectively achieve policy impact from academic research. Prior to her current role she worked within the Sustainability Team at Policy Connect as a Policy and Research Manager, co-authoring a report on flood risk management in England.
She holds a BSc in International Politics from Brunel University 2019, and an MSc in International Public Policy from UCL in 2020.

With 15 years of international trade experience, he has served as Ecuador's commercial attaché in Panamá (2012), the UK (2015), Switzerland (2019), and Germany (2020). Additionally, he has worked as a consultant for Germany’s Import Promotion Desk and the United Nations’ International Trade Centre. Having resided in the UK for over 7 years, Juan is currently the Head of Corporate Affairs at Canning House, directing corporate strategy and fostering connections between the UK, Latin America and Iberia. He also serves as the co-chair of the Anglo-Ecuadorian Society, actively contributing to cultural and business ties.

Clorrie Yeomans

Clorrie Yeomans is the Corporate Affairs Officer at Canning House: the UK-Latin American forum. Clorrie specialises in building relations with businesses operating in UK and Latin American markets. Prior to joining Canning House in January 2023, Clorrie was a Research Assistant at the University of Oxford’s Department for International Development and interned at LatinNews analysing Latin American politics, security, and economics. Clorrie holds an MPhil in Latin American Studies from the University of Oxford and a BA (Hons) in Modern Languages from Durham University. She speaks Spanish and French and is studying Portuguese. Outside of work, Clorrie stands on the Committee of the Anglo-Argentine Society and the Canning Club (social club for individuals connected to Latin America and Iberia).

Charles Hecker is the author of Zero Sum: The Arc of International Business in Russia,” to be published on 28 November 2024 by Hurst Publishers.  Zero Sum looks at the history of Western business in Russia from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The opening and closing of Russia as a market is one of the greatest experiments in global commerce; the book features dozens of interviews with the men and women who lived and worked there over the years. Charles is also a partner (on writing sabbatical) at Control Risks, the international, specialist risk consultancy, where he was previously the managing partner of the firm’s Moscow office. He speaks fluent Russian and has degrees in Russian and Soviet Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard University.

Daniel Sleat is a Senior Policy advisor at the Tony Blair Institute with significant experience supporting high-level political figures on a wide range of policy & research areas, with a particular focus on geopolitics. He is also a committed Buddhist and am deeply focussed on aligning personal change with making as big a difference to others as he can.

Joni Smith is the Director for Global Political Engagement at the Tony Blair Institute. Joni has over 10 years of experience within the Scottish Government having represented them locally as well as internationally in Brussels and Washington DC.

Imad Ahmed is a Climate Advisor at the Tony Blair Institute specialising in energy and climate finance for infrastructure. He is primarily based in London but travels to support the  in-country teams and client governments, and at times provide time-bound embedded support. He is also building out and managing TBI's embedded Climate Finance Advisors programme and support their climate diplomacy work. Imad is an Honorary Research Fellow at UCL, a member of the Liberal International Climate Justice Committee; on the academic board of the Paddy Ashdown Forum, and on the board of Liberal International British Group. He has published thought pieces across major outlets including the Financial Times and The New York Times and has published academic work in peer-reviewed journals. In 2021, Imad published a book on the nexus between climate change and hydropower in Zambia with Springer Nature.

4:00-5:00 Fighting for Transparency: Insights into work at an International NGO

In this session, we explore what it's like to work for an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability. Yi Kang Choo will talk about his work and experience at Transparency International as a International Programmes Officer, sharing insights on how to navigate the INGO industry. Transparency International UK is a leading independent anti-corruption organisation, and is part of the global Transparency International movement. For more than 25 years, they have worked to expose and prevent corruption so that no one in the UK and where the UK has influence has to suffer its consequences.

Yi Kang Choo is currently the International Programmes Officer at Transparency International, where he delivers timely, consistent, rigorous operational support and programme administration towards the Global Health and Defence & Security Programme. He also supports the delivery of work within Advocacy, Research, and other areas as requested. This include presenting the Government Defence Integrity Index (GDI) 2020 in the 2023 Taiwan International Military Integrity Academic Forum, and recently contributed to a research paper: Blissfully Blind: The new US push for defence industrial collaboration with partner countries and its corruption risks. Besides, with a strong interest in championing the welfare and meaningful engagement of young people in governments and civil society, he is selected as Youth Future Foundation’s Future Voices Group member where he advocates for the changes and solutions required to address youth unemployment issues in the UK. He is also serving as a Board member at CIVICUS, where he provides governance and strategic advice to effectively support the Alliance’s mission in strengthening citizen action and civil society worldwide. Throughout his youth leadership and volunteering journey, Yi Kang was awarded the International Student of the Year in Ireland, and the Allstate NI Queen’s University Belfast Student of the Year; received the Diana Award, which is the most prestigious accolade a young person aged 9-25 can receive for their social action or humanitarian work; and was recently appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce (FRSA) due to his positive social impact on communities around him. He holds a Masters in Corporate Law from the University of Cambridge, and a LLB Law Degree from the Queen’s University of Belfast.

Dr Melanie Garson is an Associate Professor in International Conflict Resolution & International Security in the Department of Political Science at University College London where she teaches about new and emerging technologies and the future of conflict in the digital age. She also teaches courses on international negotiation and tech diplomacy. She is also the Cyber Policy Lead and Tech Geopolitics Lead at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change. Her work focuses on cyber policy, the geopolitics AI, compute and the internet, the rise of tech companies as geopolitical actors, data governance as well as the intersection of disruptive tech, foreign policy, defence and diplomacy. Melanie presents regularly at international conferences globally on the implications of cyber, AI and emerging technologies on geopolitics and foreign policy, as well as provides commentary in podcasts, webinars and at major media outlets including BBC, Sky, CNN, Fox News, France 24, and DeutscheWelle. Melanie is an accredited mediator and has worked as a solicitor in the International Disputes department of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. She received her PhD from University College London, a Masters in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Medford, MA).
