Biography

Daughter of John Harding. Married John Tharp III of Green Pond. Their second son William was baptised in St James, Jamaica, 13/09/1762. An annuitant on Green Pond from at least 1773 until her death in 1793, in lieu of dower. Remarried, to John Stevens, 24/09/1769, when she was described as "of Parish of St George Bloomsbury". The will of Ann Stevens of Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, was proved 17/04/1793.

Ann Stevens of Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, widow.

To Kenneth Mackenzie of Cornhill, Broker, and William Bray of Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, £500 upon trust to invest in government and other securities and to apply the interest towards the maintenance and education of my grandson John Stevens Hayle, son of George Hayle and Sarah his wife. He to have the capital transferred to him at age 21.

Also to John Stevens Hayle my female negro in Jamaica called Oliva and her issue.

To my granddaughter Ann Hayle £200 to be invested in securities and the capital transferred to her at age 21 or marriage. The interest meanwhile to pay for her maintenance and education.

Also to Ann Hayle my negro wench called Delia with her issue and the gold watch which was intended to be given by me to her late mother Sarah Hayle deceased.

To my daughter Catherine now wife of Thomas Jameson of Hart Street, Bloomsbury, surgeon, my house in Great Russell Street where I now reside, and also all my jewells, plate, china etc in the house.

To my eldest son John Tharp and my son William Tharp and to John Tharp son of the said William Tharp £100 each.

All rest and residue of my estate I bequeath equally amongst my daughters Elizabeth Chambers, widow, Ann Reid, widow, Mary Campbell, wife of John Campbell of High Holborn, upholsterer and Catherine now wife of Thomas Jameson as tenants in common.

My nephew John Tharp of Good Hope in Trelawny in Jamaica and William Rhodes Bernard of Childemas in St James Jamaica to be executors in Jamaica; Kenneth Mackenzie and William Bray executors in England.

Codicil dated 10/12/1789, of Great Russell Street. I revoke my bequest of £100 each to my sons John Tharp and William Tharp and instead leave them all monies as shall be due from my jointure on the Jamaica estate over and above the sum of £2,000 Jamaica currency.

Proved in London 17/04/1793 by William Bray.
